Lisa Wenger, owner of the Healing Haven of Wisconsin salon, runs the program at several hospitals in the area. "We talk about how looking better and feeling good helps you heal," Wenger said. Each participant receives a kit of skin products and make-up to match their skin tone. Wenger then teaches them how to take care of their skin, especially with the side effects that can occur from radiation and chemotherapy. She also teaches them how to best apply make-up and what products to stay away from. "You just see how people's spirits are changed and lifted, because they're not alone anymore," Wenger said. "They have a safe place to be in." There are also Look Good, Feel Better programs for men and teenagers. Wenger's Healing Haven salon in Pewaukee offers a private, one-on-one setting for people who have to deal with hair loss due to medical treatments. It's difficult in a public salon to have your head shaved, Wenger said. "I've had a lot of women tell me the hardest part is to lose their hair," Wenger said. "To a lot of people, that's their identity." Wenger honors the process by scattering the hair in the patient's garden or her own. She will help them find a wig and teach them how to create eyebrows. For people who do not want to wear a wig, she teaches them how to create attractive scarf and turban styles. She also is working to create a clothing line that hides some of the medical apparatuses that come with certain diseases. "I always tell them, this is where you take charge of the cancer," Wenger said. "You can now create anything you want." She received treatment at Froedtert Community Memorial Hospital and found that support was what helped her stay afloat. "My husband was my rock and caretaker," Badke said. Badke had to undergo six treatments of chemotherapy and would have treatments on Fridays so her husband was there to watch the children over the weekend. Badke works at Community Memorial, and they were flexible about letting her work her schedule around when she was feeling well, so that she could take off the week after chemo treatments. "My advice would be just to take one day at a time," Badke said. "Use people around who are willing to help. Don't refuse help." Badke said it was hard to accept the help, but she eventually accepted assistance with carpooling her children to school and from her mother-in-law with cooking. Her coworkers even got together and bought gift cards for her to order take-out when she didn't feel up to cooking. Badke also attended support group meetings at Community Memorial and still attends to support new patients.
