OCTOBER 2013 Freeman Brookfield & Elm Grove/Page 7A Raymonds leads East soccer team past Central Junior scores twice By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – Talk about your beautiful goals – maybe a little lucky to start with but plenty pretty at the finish. Brookfield East High School junior Peter Raymonds had a gem, and it turned out to be all the Spartans needed in their Greater Metro Conference crosstown rivalry against Brookfield Central last month. Raymonds added another goal – and junior Mick Kemnitz rammed in a 20-yard free kick in between – for a 3-0 victory that was only a three-goal difference because of outstanding goalkeeping by Central senior Tyler Moore. But it was Raymonds' first goal 17 minutes, 38 seconds into the contest that set the tone. Junior Winston Robert F. Borkowski/Special to The Freeman From left: Brookfield East junior Peter Raymonds is congratulated by teammates,Austin Toy, Jared Ernst, Ryan Cape and Matt Reiels after scoring the first goal. Markusse started the play on the right side. "I saw (Raymonds) coming across so I decided to play it," Markusse said. "The ball took a lucky bounce, and he finished it. That's all that matters." The "lucky bounce" went over a defender to Raymonds, who had his back to the goal but then somehow got off a shot – or a "flick" as coach Herbie Dundun called it. "I knew (Moore) would be coming, so I bounced the ball over him," Raymonds said. "When I shot it, I knew it was going to go in." "The good strikers are very clever," Dundun said. some tactical issues facing the 1-0 deficit late in the game. "We changed to play only three in the back, which we know is a very risky approach, but we're using this like a classroom. We're trying to teach and they've got to learn," Mroz said. "We know that there are going to be some growing pains this early, but the approaches we thought would be there were there. "We just weren't able to capitalize and as we got down to a skeleton crew, we knew that it would be tough." Kemnitz's goal came at the 68:36 mark, and Peter Raymonds' second goal came with only 2:47 remaining on an assist from senior David Loffredo. "I thought we could have had a couple more goals but their keeper is really good and it took awhile to break him down," Markusse said. East piled up a huge possession advantage in the second half with the help of Central sending more players into the attack. Central tennis team defeats East BROOKFIELD – Brookfield Central High School's girls tennis team beat Brookfield East 5-2 in a Greater Metro Conference dual match last month. East's Emma Corwin won at No. 1 singles when her opponent retired in the second set, and East's Sadie Spahn won 6-2 0-6, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Central's singles winners were Kim Smith, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3; and Libby Protz, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4 Doubles winners were Ali Bublitz and Anie Porritt, 63, 6-0 at No. 1; Saloni Rao and Tori Rieves, 7-6 (5) 0-6, 6-3 at No. 2; and Annie Malone-Deborah Liu, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. "When I saw it was going to be a one-on-one, I knew he was going to flick it because of his peripheral view of the keeper. The best thing he did was the flick." The 1-0 lead held up for almost 41 more minutes as Moore saved a penalty shot in the first half, saved a point-blank shot by senior Michael Lesar and saved two good shots by Raymonds as well. Raymonds also went just wide on a shot and hit the top post on another while his junior brother, Henry, was denied by Moore on yet another shot. "He's a top goalkeeper – as good as it gets in the state," Central coach Jon Mroz said of Moore, who was an allconference keeper last season. "Give them credit. He made some beautiful saves," Dundun said. Moore's play kept the Lancers in the game for a long time but Central, playing for the first time this season on grass rather than artificial turf, had some cramping problems added to IN BRIEF We Back the Pack at Heritage Place!
