Othman Atta, executive director of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, said the religious organization received its building permit July 29 for the mosque to be constructed at Pheasant Drive and Calhoun Road. There were some delays in construction, due to the plans for the mosque being amended to center the building on the property for the convenience of parking and some aesthetic changes to the build- ing, he said. Those changes required additional city approvals. The initial approval process in 2012 was not without some controversy . Neighbors expressed concerns about the project, such as its perceived potential for increased traffic, during several municipal meetings. But on May 15, 2012, the Common Council unanimously approved the mosque and construction was initially planned to start last summer or fall. Atta said excavation started the first week of August and the footings and foundation walls have been poured. He said the work is progressing quickly and the hope is to have all of the walls, roof, doors and windows in place before winter starts, so work can be done inside the building during the cold months. "I think they are really happy with progress," Atta said of the Brookfield- and Waukesha-area Muslim community "Everything is going . as smoothly as expected." Although the completion date is unknown, Atta said the hope is to have the building in use by next summer's monthly Ramadan observance, which begins at the end of June. "It will be a big deal," Atta said of the opening celebration. "We will want to invite a lot of people and we will do an open house for the community ."
