Double Shoals Rd., Lawndale, NC 28090 John Kaskie is among four senior citizens from Rutherford County Senior Center who will compete in the NC State Senior Games in Raleigh beginning Friday, Sept. 22. Kaskie is a musician and will play an original waltz for the state competition. He won fi rst place in Performing Arts at the Rutherford games for his original waltz played on his accordion, titled "Waltzing with Mlâc", pronounced mee laach, the Slavic form of Miles. (His grandmother, Sophia Ducovich is the fi rst generation born in the US. The family roots are in Croatian). He shared the story of the waltz. During the height of the global pandemic, Kaskie's son, Joseph Kaskie and daughter-in-law Paige were expecting their fi rst child. The baby boy's name was Miles John Kaskie. He was delivered unborn (still born) just two weeks before his scheduled "birthday." The family was devastated, Kaskie said. "One day last June after mowing a large area on a hot and humid day, I sat down on the swing on the screen porch and dozed off," Kaskie said. "In a dream, a voice asked me, 'Pappy', if we could waltz. 'My name is Mlâc'." "The Dream felt more real than I can explain to you," he said. Kaskie said when he woke up he started writing the waltz for his grandson. Waltzing is not new to Kaskie. "My mother waltzed with me as my fi rst dance. I waltzed with my sons when they were infants. I waltzed with my three grandchildren when they were infants," Kaskie said. After writing the waltz, he wasn't sure how the couple would feel about the waltz that is in memory of their baby boy. "I was reluctant to share" but when he did share with Joseph and Paige, they were pleased. "She liked it." The couple had another child born Oct. 13, 2022 who will celebrate her fi rst birthday next month. In Pennsylvania, Kaskie began playing the accordion at age six. He played professionally for a while, starting in his middle to late teens at banquets, holidays and picnics. "I played at my father's funeral, the 'Orphan Waltz', he said. He also said playing the accordion was benefi cial, "when the accordion man always got the girls." Eight years ago Kaskie moved from the Pittshburgh, Pa. area to Rutherford County on the outskirts of Forest City. One son and his family live in Charlotte. "I wanted to come and be closer to him," he said. They have three children. When he isn't playing his accordion here in Forest City, Kaskie says he spends a lot of time mowing his 13 acres of property. "I mow a lot of grass and explore." In Pennsylvania he had several jobs, but the best of all was working with mentally challenged males and adults. He helped develop training programs for them for about 25 years, teaching them about life, money, banking and other life lessons. He also did the same thing for the school district. Of his competition at the State Games, Kaskie said, "I am honored to represent Rutherford County at the State Games," he said. On Saturday, Sept. 23 when he returns home from competition (on his birthday) he's hoping he'll have the best birthday present ever - the Performing Arts trophy. To him it's more than a waltz. "It means so much to me. I just hope I get to tell the story," he said prior to going to Raleigh. Although Kaskie isn't a regular at the Senior Center, he read about the Senior Games competition in Rutherford Weekly and knew he wanted to compete. Kaskie also gives a shout out to Small Town Roasters in Rutherfordton for allowing him to play the waltz there and to fi ne tune it there before a small audience.
