Another wish was from a WWII veteran, who was one of the 316 survivors of the Indianapolis, the ship that delivered the bomb to Hiroshima. He wanted to have a fi shing trip with his sons and grandsons. Another loved Elvis and "she had the time of her life at a meet and greet with Travis Powell, Elvis tribute artist and then at his concert at the Foundation (Performing Arts Center, Isothermal Community College). "Ever since that time, I have looked for ways to help provide ways for my residents to fulfi ll wishes." In her new role in western North Carolina, Zimmerman has received three requests thus far and is looking for more seniors who have a wish. Besides trying to get Donny Osmond and Ms. Kim together, she has a request from a woman for a lift chair and another senior wants to meet Alan Jackson. Zimmerman is a music therapist and owned her own business, is an activity director and also a Certifi ed Dementia Practitioner. She and her husband, a veteran of the military, have lived in a lot of places, she said before retiring to Rutherford County. "I have been married to my wonderful husband, Paul, for 33 years. We have one baby girl, Gigi, a rambunctious shih tzu," she says. Zimmerman also enjoys singing, playing the guitar and making pictures from old jewelry. Her latest is a rooster. She also volunteers at the Holly Springs Senior Citizens home and Oak Grove Nursing and Rehab. Zimmerman is looking for other requests from seniors in Rutherford County and the area. "We are currently applying for multiple grants to help fulfi ll wishes for seniors in Rutherford County. Any and all grants and contributions collected in Rutherford County are solely used for the purpose of the resident's wishes here in this county," Tish said. "It is my passion to work with the elderly," said Zimmerman. "I have seen the needs of the elderly go unnoticed and unfulfi lled. It would be my honor to help the senior population in Rutherford County and surrounding area see wishes come true, no matter how small!" Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c(3) non-profi t charitable organization that grants wishes to seniors who are over 65 years old and have an income of less than 200% of poverty level annually, or who are permanent residents of a nursing facility. "Colfax — Where People Come Together" — is the theme of the 2023 Colfax Free Fair & Ellenboro School Carnival that is underway through Saturday night on the former school grounds off Hollis Road in Ellenboro. The exhibit hall, food vendors and games and rides all come to a close on Saturday evening. The fair is celebrating its 95th year of families coming together. Saturday from 1 to 5pm has been designated as Family Day with armbands being sold for $25 allowing everyone to ride as many rides as possible during the four hours. On Saturday, Sept. 23 the line up of free live music begins at 5pm with the Southern Gospel group, In His Glory, to be featured in concert. A classic car and truck show is from 1 to 6pm also on Saturday with awards to be presented at 6pm. Eight veterans will be recognized Saturday evening at 6:15pm and will be presented a patriotic quit made by Jean Dycus Honeycutt. Old farm engines, tractors and other farm machinery will also be on display through Saturday night. Bingo is played every day and there are plenty of prizes. Food vendors bring every kind of food including grilled corn-on-the cob. The exhibit hall features competitive exhibits such as canned goods, jams, jellies; horticulture: apples, potatoes, watermelon, pumpkins, tomatoes, onions, fi eld crops, potted plans and cut fl owers, art and photography, sewing and needlework, woodwork, metalwork, breads, cakes, cookies and other bakery items. The youth division is from ages 5 to 18. Ribbons and monetary prizes will go to the top winners. Money that comes from the exhibit hall entries and sponsors will support the premiums, entertainment and a portion will go to the Fiddler's & Bluegrass Convention that will be held Nov. 18 at the new Ellenboro School. Funds that are remaining will be designated to Ellenboro School. Enjoy catching up with old and new friends each evening and Saturday.
