Thursday, August 24-August 30, 2023 www.shelbyinfo.com 704/484-1047 - shelby shopper & info - Page 21 It may not have been a redemption tour for League City (Tex.) Post 554 this season. But af- ter coming one win away from making the 2022 American Legion World Series semifi nals, Post 554 and its left-handed pitcher Jacob Cyr wouldn't be denied in 2023. Cyr threw a no-hitter — only the third of its kind in ALWS history — in the opening game of the 2023 ALWS, and pitched a second shutout in the fi nal game to give League City the fi rst ALWS championship in team and Texas state history. For his efforts, Cyr was named 2023 George W. Rulon American Legion Player of the Year. He went 3-0 with 21 strikeouts while yielding 19 hits, six runs and two walks in 24 innings in region- al and ALWS play. "He pitched his butt off both games here and really he's done that all season," League City centerfi elder Kyeler Thompson said of Cyr. "It's an honor to play behind him." In last Thursday's tournament opener that was delayed 105 minutes by a morning rainstorm, Cyr yielded only a leadoff walk in the fourth inning of his 4-0 no-hit victory over Cheyenne (Wyo.) Post 6. Then in Tuesday's championship game against Lincoln (Neb.) Post 3, Cyr yielded hits in fi ve of the seven innings, and six hits overall, but walked none and only once did a runner get as far as third base. "You know when you put Cyr on the mound, you're going to be competitive," League City coach Ronnie Oliver said of his pitcher. Defensive plays, including two by Cyr himself, helped keep Lincoln off the scoreboard Tuesday. Rightfi elder Ayden Roecker-Allen made a diving grab for an out in the fi rst inning and left fi eld- er Erik Anchondo also had a diving grab in the sixth. And twice in the fourth inning, Cyr made plays that led to outs. He snagged a grounder with a runner on second base with one out and threw him out trying to advance to second and later caught a hard line drive for the fi nal out of the inning with Lincoln runners on fi rst and third base. "It just felt good having my teammates be- hind me and I had my trust in them," Cyr said of the defensive support he received. According to Cyr, League City was confi dent both years it came to Shelby and now Post 554 will enter the 2024 American Legion Baseball season as a de- fending champion. "We actually felt good about winning this in both years," Cyr said. "It feels re- ally good to get the fi rst title in our state's history. It means a lot." Here's a roundup of all 15 games from the 2023 ALWS: Game 1: League City (Tex.) 4, Cheyenne (Wyo.) 0. Jacob Cyr set history with the third no-hitter in ALWS history in the tournament opener that was delayed 105 minutes by an early morning rainstorm.afreron Thursday in the rain-delayed opener of the 96th ALWS. Cyr joined Gene Guerriero of Staten Island, N.Y., in 1968 and Rich Schroeder of Santa Monica, Ca- lif., in 1976 in the record books, and is the fi rst to throw a no-hitter at Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium. Game 2: Brooklawn (N.J.) 9, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) 2. Post 72's record 17th appearance at the ALWS opened with impressive comeback as Brooklawn trailed 2-0 early before rolling to a comfortable victory. Game 4: Florence (S.C.) 3, Lincoln (Neb.) 0.Left-hander Aydin Palmer had a record-setting 14 strikeouts for a seven-inning game as Post 1 won its opening game. Brody Cook's bas- es-loaded walk, Zach Hunt's and Cook's two-out RBI single provided Florence's run. Game 5: Cheyenne (Wyo.) 2, Ellsworth (Maine 1). Julian Romero hit a two-out, two-strike walkoff game-winning double to score Colter McAnelly from fi rst base as Post 6 picked up its fi rst win in its second ALWS game. It was Rome- ro's second walkoff hit in seven days as he hit a walkoff winner in a 4-3 victory over Fort Collins, Colo., that advanced Cheyenne into the North- west Regional title game. Game 6: League City (Tex.) 3, Troy (Ala.) 2. League City gained a measure of revenge for a 4-3 loss that ended its season in 2022 with the second straight walkoff win of the day - and fi fth all-time in Shelby ALWS history - as Kyeler Thompson hit a walkoff two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Game 7: Florence (S.C.) 5, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) 4. After trailing four times in its 5-0 run to the Southeast Regional last week, Florence rallied again for a win with a two-run top of the sixth inning. Lincoln's Paul Shortridge handed Brooklawn with its fi rst ALWS shutout since 1992 with his fi rst shutout this season. Shortridge also sur- vived Post 72 rallies in the fi rst, second, sixth and seventh innings and Tanner Peterson's RBI single and Owen Laessig's RBI groundout ac- counted for the two fi fth-inning runs and Garrett Springer's two-out RBI single accounted for the fi nal run. Game 9: Cheyenne (Wyo.) 3, Troy (Ala.) 2. A contest delayed an hour after a lightning strike near the ballpark knocked off several electronic services, Cheyenne overcame a record-setting 15-strikeout effort by Troy's Tucker Jackson to rally for a win that advanced Post 6 into Mon- day's semifi nals. Cheyenne reliever Corey Wil- liams threw 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and Kade Coates' two-run single in the top of the seventh capped a three-run rally. Game 10: Ellsworth (Maine) 4, League City (Tex.) 2. Ellsworth rallied from an early defi cit to win in its pool play fi nale. Hunter Curtis threw a fi ve-hitter with four strikeouts and had two hits and one RBI to lead the winners. Game 11: Lincoln (Neb.) 9, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) 0. Post 3 wrapped up its berth in the semifi nals with a second straight shutout as Chase Nelson threw a fi ve-hitter and A.J. Evas- co (2 hits, triple, 2 RBIs), Tanner Peterson (2 hits, 1 RBI), Kai Burkey (RBI double) and Gar- rett Springer (RBI single) led Lincoln's nine-hit offense. Damon Suriani (4 hits, 5 RBIs) and Sal Serici (2 hits, 2 RBIs) led the Brooklawn offense. Game 13: Lincoln (Neb.) 2, Cheyenne (Wyo.) 1. Lincoln catcher Garrett Springer hit a one-out, two-run single for Lincoln's only hit in a victory that spoiled hard luck loser Colton McAnelly's bid for a no-hitter. Cheyenne had 13 baserun- ners on four hits, six walks, one hit batter and two fi elding errors but were able to manufacture only one run. Lincoln drew a leadoff walk and took advantage of an error on a sacrifi ce bunt in its winning rally. Game 14: League City (Tex.) 4, Brooklawn (N.J.) 1. Post 554 accomplished something no other team from its state had ever done in the 96-year history after a come-from-behind victory over all-time ALWS participant Post 72 makes: League City became fi rst ever Texas participant in the ALWS title game. Post 554 scored all four runs without the benefi t of a hit.
