But it's telling that it didn't hire just anybody to re- place Howard — it chose multi- award-winning film star Don Cheadle ("Hotel Rwanda," 2004). The Rhodes character has, in- deed, proven to be central to Marvel's ongoing plans. He's ap- peared in eight films and TV shows so far, with Rhodes don- ning an armored suit of his own to become the Avengers team member War Machine. And now he has a film of his very own in the works. There are no plot details avail- able yet for "Armor Wars" — all we know is that it will be a starring vehicle for War Machine, and it will continue on from the devastating events of "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). And so, Cheadle's likely happy he stepped into the part. Yet it would be hard to argue that Howard's career suffered for taking a different path. In the time since "Iron Man," he has starred in the critically acclaimed Fox series "Empire" and won numerous awards of his own, including for the big-screen drama "The Walk" (2022) and the streaming TV series "The Best Man: The Final Chap- ters." Q: I just rewatched "To Sir, With Love" for the first time in a while, and saw that it was directed by James Clavell. Is that the same guy who wrote "Shogun"? A: The 1960s were a big decade for James Clavell. They saw him publish the first two of his so- called "Asian Saga" novels — "King Rat" in 1962 and "Tai-Pan" in 1966 — and, as you say, direct and also write 1967's "To Sir, With Love," one of the great issues- based high school movies. Clavell's publishing career — also included "Asian Saga" follow- ups "Shogun," "Noble House," "Whirlwind" and "Gai-Jin" — has since eclipsed his film career. He also wrote the screenplays for the classic 1958 horror film "The Fly" and the none-more- classic 1963 war movie "The Great Escape," among other popular hits. Clavell died in 1994, but his name and legacy live on. A new miniseries adaptation of "Shogun" is in post-production now, due for release on FX later this year. Have a question?
