Entertainment Now | June 3 - 9, 2023 By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I was watching the ver- sion of "The Three Musketeers" with Oliver Platt and realized I haven't seen him in a while. Where did he get his start and where is he now? A: It's often the case that when we think a star has sud- denly disappeared, it's actually because they're just on a show that, for some reason, we're just not aware of. Since 2015, Oliver Platt (still best known, as you say, for playing Porthos in the 1993 adaptation of "The Three Musketeers") has been busy starring as Dr. Daniel Charles on NBC's "Chicago Med." But since it's part of the highly net- worked group of Chicago shows, that's also included almost a sea- son's worth of appearances on "Chicago P.D.," "Chicago Fire" and "Chicago Justice." Once a prolific big-screen sup- porting man, these shows have been taking up almost all of his time since. It might not surprise you to learn that Platt, a chameleon with a big presence, got his start on the stage. He studied drama at Tufts Universi- ty and did stage work in Massa- chusetts and, later, New York City. Hollywood soon came calling, via a part in 1988's "Married to the Mob." It was a mid-size role (sidekick to one of the main characters), but the film was a high-profile, star- studded hit. And so the roles grew from there, though always as a supporting star. Even on "Chicago Med," he's part of an ensemble cast, including some fellow great character actors like S. Epatha Merkerson ("Law & Order") and Steven Weber ("Wings"). Q: Why did they recast the Rhodes character in the "Iron Man" and "Avengers" films? A: According to the original ac- tor, it was a money issue, plain and simple. Terrence Howard played Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr., "Sher- lock Holmes," 2009) friend and military link, Lt. Col. James Rhodes, in the original "Iron Man" (2008). The film was clearly intended, even then, to kick off the sprawling uni- verse of Marvel comics films that followed, and so it would be the first of many films featuring Rhodes.
