EOE THE TOWN OF SPINDALE SEEKING A CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER/FIRE INSPECTOR The REaCH Omegabytes robotics team wrapped up another successful competition season as they returned from the April 19- 22 international FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas FIRST is a global nonprofi t organization that seeks to advance STEM education through a robust program of robotics competitions at district, state, and international levels. The culminating event is the annual FIRST Championship, which draws over 30,000 attendees from around the world for fi eld competition and educational conference sessions for children and youth in three divisions: the FIRST Lego League for PreK-8th grade, the FIRST Tech Challenge for grades 7-12, and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) for grades 9-12. More than 600 teams from across the globe, 14 of which were from North Carolina and included the REaCH Omegabytes, competed in the high school level FIRST Robotics Competition at this year's championship. In the Houston fi eld competition, the REaCH Omegabytes advanced to the semifi nals, making it to the fi nal round of semis. Team members also took advantage of the extensive schedule of educational conference sessions across numerous STEM and team development topics. Omegabytes members attended educational sessions on leadership, community outreach, programming, and neurodiversity, among others. The Omegabytes earned their berth in the FIRST Championship by way of their FIRST North Carolina state fi nals win of the Impact Award, the highest award given by FIRST. The Impact Award is described by the FIRST organization as follows: "The FIRST Impact Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST; it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encourage more of today's youth to become science and technology leaders." The impact of the team on its members and its community was the key factor in their successful run for the Impact Award and is the heart of the team's mission. The Omegabytes have an impressive record from this year's competition season. At the state level, based on combined fi eld competition and award points from all district and state events, the team is ranked 5th out of the 89 FIRST North Carolina teams. The team's combined points from fi eld competition, regional- and state-level Impact Awards, and a regional Industrial Design Award earned them this ranking and the distinction of being the only rural, western North Carolina team among the state's top ten. The team shares the top ten spots with six teams from the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill and one team each from Greensboro, Charlotte, and Greenville. In fi eld performance statistics alone, the team is in the top 2.5% performing U.S. teams, the top 2% internationally, and has the top fi eld performance statistics of the North Carolina teams (source: Statbotics). Even as the team refl ects on these competition successes, more important to them is their ongoing mission of transforming their community by fostering a sense of hope for the futures of children and families through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) education. The team is already planning upcoming team development and community ou ach events that they hold throughout the year and building their calendar of fun, educational, and inspiring activities for the coming summer and fall. 2023 competition season update — First Championship in Houston, Texas Article Provided By: Jean Gordon.
