It may be after a friendly conversation or something we routinely say to a family member or co- worker. Has it ever dawned on you that there will be a day when you will say your last goodbye? We all would like our fi nal goodbye to be well-planned and thought out. Regretfully, chances are, we will say it without the knowledge that we will never see that person again this side of eternity. How many times have we seen someone and had a brief conversation with them and then several days later found out that they have suddenly passed away? We missed an opportunity to have a heartfelt conversation. If only we had known, it would have been our last goodbye! It is so easy for us to live with the presumption that we are invincible or that our loved ones will always be there. The harsh reality is that our lives are unpredictable and fragile. We really never know what tragedy lies ahead on any given day. Is there anyone we need to encourage today by showing an act of kindness toward or by giving a word of appreciation? Perhaps there is someone we need to forgive or ask for forgiveness before our last goodbye. We must never forget that when we say goodbye to a loved one, it may be our last. Author and playwright Jonathan Harnisch said it best when he wrote, "Sadly enough, the most painful goodbyes are the ones that are left unsaid and never explained."
