Poplar St., Petersburg 812-354-8500 Pike County's News Network Since 1898 Knox and played with quick hands, racking up steals and driving the lane for addition- al buckets. Baskets by Pey- ton Howald and Junior Chase Ridao added to the period that saw the Chargers up 47-17 at the end of three. The Chargers continued their assault on the Warriors with a three-point basket from Ridao early in the fourth quar- ter. The Chargers continued to play good defense and re- bound well as North Knox failed to convert on several shot attempts. Defense was the key to the Charger win with the team making mul- tiple stops in a row on that side of the ball. "It's funny how when you play defense, offense comes a little easier. Shots even seem to fall easier when you are playing on the defensive end," said Coach Elliott. The Chargers took the win over the Warriors with a final of 58 -27. The Chargers have a busy week, playing three games against Evansville Memori- al, South Spencer and Mount Vernon. Pike Central controlled the opening tip and the first shot attempt by Junior Julian Gish, with just under a min- ute gone, bounced off the rim. That set the tone of the night for the Chargers. The offense was not work- ing for either team initially as they failed to put the ball through the net for the first 3:30 of the game. Charger Ju- nior Quade Morton started the scoring when he hit from behind the arc, putting the Chargers up 3-0 but Wash- ington quickly matched the score with a trey of their own by Colton Stower, who led all scorers with 23. Senior Peyton Howald gave the Chargers the lead again on a bucket 45 seconds later at 5 -3. The teams exchanged baskets during the remainder of the period with the Char- gers having the opportunity to go ahead. The Hatchets drove the lane and missed the shot. The ball was rebounded by Peyton Howald who made the outlet pass to Gish. Gish's scoring attempt was unsuccessful and the Chargers finished the quarter down 11-10. Washington inbounded the ball to start the second and quickly converted on a back door pass to Brycen Neidigh. A quick five points by Char- ger Junior Chase Ridao tied the game at 15 and Washing- ton pulled ahead again 11 seconds later on a three by Neidigh. Contributions of a three-point basket and two from the line by Gish, who scored a team high 16 points, put the Chargers up 20 -18. This would be the last lead the Chargers would have. Washington moved the ball well offensively and the Char- gers looked confused on de- fensive. "Team defense was pretty bad. ( We) let them get some easy looks and that hurt us," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. The Hatchets rolled off eight unanswered to close the half, up 26 -20. The Chargers controlled the ball to begin the third and appeared ready to cut into the Hatchets' lead. Twelve sec- onds in, Gish drove the lane and was fouled and made two from the charity stripe, but the Chargers could not get things rolling. "The Hatch- ets did a nice job on that end (defense) and our offensive struggles carried over to the defense," commented El- liott. "We became stagnant and didn't move well without the basketball." Points from Peyton Howald and Morton closed the gap to two with 5:30 left before the Hatchets went on a nine to four run to close out the third up by nine, 39 -30. Washington extended their lead to 11 opening the fourth, and the Chargers were able reduce it to five, 43-38 with just over five minutes left in the game. But that was as close as the Chargers would get. The lack of defensive stops by the Chargers allowed the Hatchets to maintain the lead, exchanging baskets for the remainder of the period. "This (loss) is going to sting a little," said Elliott, add- ing, "We have to learn (from our mistakes) and get better." The Chargers' record now stands at 9 -4. Gish had 16 points in the 55-48 loss to Washington on Saturday. JV Chargers fall to Hatchets, 58-21 It was a tough night Sat- urday as the Pike Central JV Chargers could not get any- thing going and recorded a loss to the Washington Hatch- ets 21-58. The Chargers scored the first points of the game on a basket by sophomore Drew Dawson. Washington an- swered back with a trey from junior Xavier Frank. Pike Central took the lead again, five to three, on a three pointer by sophomore Albert Whitehead. That would be the last time the Chargers saw the lead. Regardless of how the Chargers tried to score, whether driving the lane or from behind the arc, nothing seemed to fall. Dawson and Whitehead had all the scor- ing for the period as the quar- ter ended with the Chargers down 15 -7. The shooting woes contin- ued for the Chargers in the second period, scoring only four points compared to 13 for the Hatchets, closing the period down 28 -11. The quickness and height of the Hatchets was difficult to overcome. Pike Central drove the lane many times during the third quarter but the ball just wouldn't drop. The only success inside during the period was when Charger sophomore Bren- ton Fryrear drove the lane with one second left and was fouled. He converted the two free throws to see the period end with Washington up 44- 16. Freshman Lane Freder- ick added the other Charger points in the period. Washington opened the fourth period with seven points in the first 50 seconds, putting the Hatchets up by 35, instituting the running clock for the remainder of the game. The Chargers netted four ad- ditional points for the game and fell by a score of 58 -21.
