Morton had 31 points against the Patriots including a three -pointer at the buzzer to extend the game. He was 13 of 24 from the field and two of five from three-point range. In the Wood Memorial game with the score tied in third quarter, Mor- ton exploded for 17 points including four threes in the quarter to lead the Chargers to a 15 -point win with 29 points. He was 10 of 16 from the floor, four of seven from three-point range and five seven from the free- throw line. "Quade had a really great week- end. He is very talented and an extremely hard-working kid," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "As a team we really played and competed well and he had a hot hand, so we kept going to him. I thought we locked in defensively as well as scoring the ball at a high rate," said Elliott. Charger senior Corey Goep- pner placed third in the 220 pound division. Goeppner received a forfeit in the first round then pinned South Spencer's Cayne Winkler (13-4) in 20 seconds. He was then pinned in the semi-finals by Tecumseh's Ma- son Hines (27-2) in 4:14. Goeppner then won the third place match by pin over Isaiah Martin of Princeton (23-8) in 3:55. "We wrestle in one of the tough- est conferences in the entire state. Three of the top four teams wres- tled at the IHSWCA Team State Du- als two weeks ago. We knew coming into the weekend it was going to be tough, and it showed. We had some of our guys who didn't wrestle as well as I expected, and others who had really good tourneys. Win or lose, I'm proud of our team," said Charger Coach John Thompson. Sophomore Paul Thompson at 195 pounds placed fifth . He start- ed his day with a pin of Tell City's Nathan Hoskinson in 1:10. In the second d he lost to North Posey's Reece Terhune. In the round two consolation match he beat Washington's Carter Tolber in 2:55 by pin and then beat Tecumseh's Trenton Durnell by pin in 4:10 to advance to the fifth place match. He the pinned Boonville's Blayze Marhand in 50 seconds. The Chargers had three wres- tlers place sixth. Briar Thomas at 138, Jayden Bolin at 160 and Skylar Shelton at 170. Ryan Gladish at 132 and Gage Morton at 120 both placed seventh for the Chargers, while Alex Gray placed eighth. "We have improved quite a bit from the beginning of the season. We need to take what we did this weekend, and use it as part of our motivation for preparing for Sec - tional. I believe we have a good shot of advancing several wrestlers to Regional, but we need to stay fo- cused and determined," said Coach Thompson. Pike Central will compete in the Southridge Sectional on Saturday with wrestling beginning at 9 a.m. Other teams in the Southridge Sec- tional are Bedford North Lawrence, Floyd Central, Forest Park, Jasper, Mitchell, New Albany, North Knox, Southridge and Tell City. Lady Chargers place seventh at PAC By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's girls swim team placed seventh in the Pocket Ath- letic Conference meet on Thursday and Saturday. Pike Central's relays had a strong performance as two of the three relays finished in sec- ond place. Pike Central's 200 medley relay team of Xavery Weisman, Shelby Keeker, Alexis Oswalt, and Jillian Bailey set a new personal record as they claimed second place in the finals with a time of 2:03, just touch- ing out Tell City at the wall by 0.22 seconds. The time was just one sec- ond off Pike Central's school record. The 200 freestyle relay of Bailey, Weisman, Addy Russell and Lexi Oswalt also placed second, again just a second off the school record with a time of 1:50.9. They again just beat third place 0.12 seconds ahead of Heritage Hills. Bailey in her senior season placed third in the 50 freestyle with her personal record time of 25.97. She was just 0.09 out of second place. Bailey also had a fourth place finish for the Chargers in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:07.44. Weisman gave the Chargers a one- two punch in the backstroke finish- ing sixth place in a time of 1:10.08. In the 200 Individual Medley, Xav- ery Weisman placed 10th and Lexi Oswalt placed 11th. Oswalt added a fourth place finish in the 100 butterfly for the Chargers to go with her relay finishes. She had a time of 1:07.41. In the 100 breaststroke, senior Shelby Keeker placed ninth with a personal record of 1:24.38. The Charger 400 Free Relay team of Jackie Berry, Ruby Sallee, Ella Adams, and Addy Russell placed 10th in 4:44.72. Mt. Vernon dominated the meet 328 points. Heritage Hills was sec- ond with 171 points just edging out Tell City with 169 points in third place. The other finishers were 4) Gibson Southern 142, 5) Boonville 122, 6) Tecumseh 119, 7) Pike Central 111, 8) S. Spencer 56, 9 ) N. Posey 56, 10)Forest Park 44 and 11) Southridge 39. Chargers top North Knox, 58-27 Pike Central got off to a slow start against the North Knox Warriors Fri- day night but finished strong to close out the game with a win, 58 -27, push- ing their record to 9 -3. Pike Central's Quade Morton con- trolled the tip from Charger Peyton Howald to start the game, but neither team was able to convert on any pos- session for the first 2:30. Pike Central's first point came when Peyton Howald converted on one of two free throws from the line after being fouled. The Chargers added two more twenty seconds lat- er on a basket by Morton, the Char- gers leading scorer with 18, who was fouled on the shot. Morton failed on the 'and one,' leaving the Chargers up 3-0. The Warriors tied the game a min- ute later on a basket by Senior Mason Lyons. The teams exchanged bas- kets with Pike Central going ahead 7-5 at the one-minute mark. North Knox attempted to hold the ball for the last shot but Pike Central creat- ed a turnover with :02 on the clock. A half court attempt from Morton as time expired hit the rim and bounced off, ending the period with the Char- gers up two. On his team's low out- put the first quarter, Charger Coach Hunter Elliott commented, "We were not after it on the defensive end in the first quarter," adding "they (North Knox) were trying to slow us down and we were trying to play faster." The Chargers got hot in the sec- ond period, outscoring the Warriors 20 -7. Great defense and unselfish play characterized the second peri- od. Charger Peyton Howald blocked the first Warrior shot attempt of the period. Morton corralled the ball and headed down court feeding sopho- more Jiles Mason for a quick two. A fter another turnover by North Knox, Morton slashed through the lane and fed Mason again for his sec- ond basket in 30 seconds. Junior Ju- lian Gish got in on the scoring action with three minutes gone in the peri- od, driving the lane to score two of his 17 for the game. Additional bas- kets by Morton, Peyton Howald and Gish put the Chargers up 21-10 with just over 2:30 to play. The Chargers closed out the period recording six while the Warriors recorded three as the quarter closed with the Chargers up 27-13. The Chargers quickly extended their lead to 21 in the third with con- tributions from Gish and Morton. Pike Central did not let up on North Lady Chargers fall at Princeton By James Capozella Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net The Princeton Lady Tigers pounced in the first quarter for an 11-2 edge over the visiting Pike Cen- tral Lady Chargers and never looked back in a 60 -31 Pocket Athletic Con- ference rivalry win last Thursday evening. The Lady Chargers were lean on first half scoring with Liberty Tay- lor contributing two baskets, Shelby Meadows one and Brailey Mills a pair of free throws. Princeton held Pike Central to just those two free throws in the 11-2 first quarter.
