Helfrich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Helfrich of Haubstadt, has been assigned temporary duty with the U.S, army Re- cruiting Station in Evans- ville, to be Recruiter assis- tant for SSG, Gilbert Riley in the Ft. Branch and Haub- stadt area. PFC Helfrich is a 1970 graduate of Haubstadt High School. PFC will be re- porting for overseas duty in Europe upon completion of his assignment here. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Schmitt of Haubstadt an- nounce the approaching Marriage of their daughter, Marilyn Jane, to David Mi- chael Elpers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Elpers of LaPorte. Miss Schmitt was a 1966 graduate of Haubstadt High School and is present- ly employed by the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company in Evansville. Mr. Elpers was a 1964 graduate of LaPorte High School and is presently employed at Hol- derbaum's Auto Service in LaPorte. The wedding will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church i Haubstadt. Several students from this area were among those named to the Dean's List at Lockyear College of Busi- ness in Evansville. Those earning academic distinc- tion were included to the 60 named for the Summer Term at the college. They are Jo Ellen Neufelder of Fort Branch, Carol Wade and Dianne Halbig, both of Haubstadt. This scholastic recognition is extended to those students who earn a 3.5 or better grade average and of a possible 4.0. Anthony Kiessel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kissel of Fort Branch, will be or- dained subdeacon and dea- con by Bishop Francis Shea. Kissel is a student at the University of Innsbruck and has been home this summer on vacation. Before return- ing to complete theological studies he will be ordained Friday, Sept. 22 a subdeacon at Sarto Retreat and Renewal Center at 7 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ox- emann spent the weekend in Terre Haute with their son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Oxemann. Mr. and Mrs. William Newman, Mr. and Mrs. Don- ald Robinson, and Mr. and Mrs. William Balback were among those from this area who attended a dinner-meet- ing and dance at the Old Mill on Saturday evening for Western & Southern Life Insurance agents and their guests. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Legion of the Company, the women were presented with com- pact mirrors, courtesy of the District Management Team. Mr. and Mrs. New- man served as president for the event. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Arm- strong attended the Hoo- sier State Press Association Advertising Conference on Saturday at Indianapolis. They were joined by their son, Gary a junior student at Indian University. Helen Meyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Meyer of Fort Branch, is serving as co-chairman of the Saint Francis College Homecom- ing activities. Miss Meyer is a senior and is majoring in elementary education. She is also a member of Kappa Phi Omega social sorority. The Saint Francis Homecoming is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29 and 30. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Eward Mason of West La- fayette, a son, Jamie Don, on September 13.. Deaths: Clarence Hick- rod, 80, of Fort Branch, passed away September 15. 45 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Friday, Sept.23, 1977 Phyllis Martin has been promoted to the Position of assistant cashier of the Farmers and Merchant Bank of Fort Branch. James Pfister, the bank's president said, "Due to the growth of our bank, more duties and responsibilities must be del- egated and Mrs. Martin has shown the desire and abili- ty to merit this promotion." Mrs. Martin is native of Fort Branch and graduated from Fort Branch High School. She has completed sever- al banking courses offered by the American Institute of Banking. She joined the bank in 1971. She is a mem- ber of Holy Cross Church and resides in Fort Branch, with her husband, Ray, and son, Derek. The promotion is effective immediately and Mrs. Martin will assume the additional duties of being in charge of mortgage loans. E2 Rick A. Sides has been promoted to Private First Class. He entered the US Arm on Nov. 26, 1976, and took his basic training at For Knox, K Y. Following basic, he was transferred to Fort McClellan, Alabama. He graduated as an MP in May and now serves as an MP at Fort Leonard Wood with the 463rd MP Co. He is current - ly attending Chemical and Biological Training School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Sides and a 1976 gradu- ate of Gibson Southern High School. Mr. and Mrs. Garland S. Wilhite of Fort Branch will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 2. Friends and relatives will be welcomed at a reception, hosted by their children in the Fellowship Hall of the Fort Branch General Baptist Church. Mr. Wilhite and the former Mabel Clark were married Sept. 29, 1927, in the Oakland City General Baptist Parsonage by the Rev. Charles Polley. They are the parents of three chil - dren: Mrs. Arvin ( Yvonne) Mann of rural Haubstadt; Garland Wilhite, Jr. of Aga- na Guam and Rev. S. Keith Wilhite of Evansville. They have nine grandchildren. Deaths: Roy McCa- rty, formerly of Princeton, passed away. 35 YEARS AGO Fort Branch Times Thursday, Sept. 24, 1987 Bethlehem General Bap- tist Church of rural Fort Branch will celebrate its 120th anniversary with a Homecoming Service Sun- day, Sept. 27. Morning wor- ship service will be at 10 :30 a.m. with a noon fellowship meal to follow. There will be afternoon services begin- ning at 2 p.m. Former pastor Rev C. Glen Ashley will be the afternoon speaker. Ev- ery one is invited to come and celebrate with the mem- bers of Bethlehem General Baptist Church. Featured during the day will be good singing, good food, good fellowship, and good preach- ing. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cleveland visited with Mrs. Nina Vickery at the Forest Del Nursing Home on Fri- day afternoon. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Scott Spradley of El - berfeld, a daughter, Melissa Sue, on Saturday, Sept. 19. 25 YEARS AGO South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997 Owensville Town Mar- shal Ron Anderson issued a reminder to all parents that they will be held responsible for any vandalism caused by their children. Anderson also said individuals in need of his assistance should contact the Gibson County Sheriff's Department. Scott Williams broke the school and course record for sixth graders on the 1.5 mile course at Fort Branch com - munity School to lead the Twig fifth and sixth graders to a dual win over Mater Dei on Thursday. Williams' re- cord-breaking time was 8:17, topping the standard set by current Haubstadt eighth grader Bryan Stunkel. The Twig runners claimed the first five places to defeat the Wildcats 15 -46 in the meet. A fter Williams, Kevin Menke was second for Fort Branch with Dustin Hall Fin - ishing third. Mark Thomp- son placing fourth and Chris Belcher coming in fifth. For the Lady Twigs, Christy Schile placed second in the seventh and eighth grade race with a time of 10 :15. Andrea Snyder was first and Rhea Pullum finished sec - ond for Fort Branch in the fifth and sixth grade girls race. Snyder's winning time was 10 :25 with Pullum com- ing in at the 12:02 mark. Dr. and Mrs. James Leroy Holder of Fort Branch will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception for friends and relatives on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 2-5 p.m. at the First Presbyteri - an Church, corner of West and Locust streets in Fort Branch. Holder and the for- mer Lois Vaught were mar- ried Oct. 3, 1947 at the Gen- eral Baptist Church in Fort Branch. They have three children,who will be hosting the reception: Janet Schmitt and Dr. Bruce Holder, both of Fort Branch, and James Holder of Raleigh, NC. They also have eight grandchil - dren. Dr. Holder graduated from Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1953 and has practiced dentistry in Fort Branch since that time. Justin, Ryan , and Stephen Rexing, all of Fort Branch have each entered two hogs in the Swine Division of the North American Interna - tional Exposition (NAILE). These entries will join more than 19,000 others that take part in the world's largest, purebred livestock show. The giant expo will be Nov. 8 -21. Producers from across the United States and Can - ada bring their livestock to the Kentucky Fair & Expo- sition Center in Louisville to compete in one of wight expo divisions: dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, swine, dairy goats, quarter horses, draft horses, and llamas. Winners will share in more than $500,000 in premiums and awards.
