The Patriots are a run- first team. In the Boonville game they ran the ball 46 times with three ball carriers gaining more than 60 yards, while only completing one of nine passes. Against North Posey they ran the ball 46 times for 283 yards with both Shane Sta- ples running for 138 yards and Skyler Staples for 112 yards. "Any time you play Heri- tage Hills they are physical, well-coached and they play team football. Even if it isn't one guy they are all capa- ble and they spread the ball around and they play really good team football," said Hart. Quar terback Camden Schipp against Nor th Posey completed only one of his five passes, but it was for 49 yards." They hit big pass plays throughout the course of the season. When you r un the style of of fense they do, completing a high percentage isn't the biggest thing of the world. It is hit- ting big plays and getting defenses to respect it. They don't throw a lot, butwhen they do we have to do a good job of making sure we don't give up big plays," said Har t. On defense the Patriots have only given up more than 20 points against North Posey, which went into over- time. Gibson Southern comes into the game 5-0 with wins over 5A Terre Haute South, Kentucky 5A defending state champs South Warren and previously unbeaten South- ridge. Coach Hart on Monday said it was too early to say if Tanner Boyd will be back at quarterback. Boyd was having a fantastic season. In the first four games he com- pleted 61 of 81 passes for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was banged up in the South Warren game and con- tinued to play. Hart said they will see how it goes this week. Sophomore Liam Br yant stepped in against South- ridge and played well, com- pleting 13-of-18 for 121 yards and one touchdown against a defense that had not allowed a touchdown in their first four games. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Fri- day at Heritage Hills. pass. Tailback Devan Roberts gashed the Raiders for 142 yards and a touchdown in 24 carries. His numbers and Gib- son Southern's would have been much better had it not been for four holding calls and a blocking call against the Ti- tans. Each negated long plays by the Titans. Turnovers were big as well for the Titans, as Gibson Southern picked off South- ridge three times and Ethan Ziliak recovered a fumble that ended a late drive for Southridge. Gibson Southern's first score was a beneficiar y of Sean DeLong's first of two interceptions on the night. Southridge had moved the ball to mid-field on their first possession, when DeLong stepped in front of a Hudson Allen pass near the 30-yard line and returned it all the way to Southridge 26-yard line. A 14-yard pass from Br yant to DeLong put the Titans at the four. DeLong would then follow a Spencer Staggs block into the end zone at the 9:07 mark. Cam Novotny knocked down the PAT for a 7-0 lead. It was the first time in five games Southridge's starting defense has been scored on this season. Southridge immediately answered as they plodded 70 yards in the 12 plays to score on a 22-yard pass from Hud- son Allen to Myles Kerkoff to tie the game with 1:58 left in the first quarter. It would turn into a defen- sive struggle as Gibson South- ern failed to score on their last four possessions of the first half and Southridge failed to score in their last three pos- session. That dr y spell for the Titans would extend into the second half as they received the kick- off, but couldn't move the ball. Southridge immediately made them pay. Allen zipped a 31-yard pass to Carter Harris for a touchdown and 14-7 lead. Gibson Southern answered as Roberts broke off a 44-yard run to the get the Titans into the red zone for a first down at the Raider 19-yard line. A holding penalty followed by a block in the back call on consecutive plays left the Ti- tans at second and 21 from the 30-yard line. Short runs by the Titans got them to fourth and 14 from the 25-yard line. Coach Nick Hart went for it. A Br yant to Michael Herren pass for 26 yards delivered for a first down on the four. "I didn't know if we were go- ing to for it, but we went on a hard count and got the look we hoped for, so we went with it. Liam (Br yant) and Michael (Herren) made a big play on it. Roberts then took it into the end zone for a 14-14 tie with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter. A fired-up Titan defense got a holding call, making it first-and-20 from the 25-yard line for Southridge. Senior Ty Whitledge dropped South- ridge tailback O'Ryan Curr y for a four-yard loss making it second-and-24 from the 21 yard line. Following an incom- plete pass, Titan defensive back Mason Scheller picked off Allen's pass giving the Ti- tans the ball at their own 40. Gibson Southern moved the ball to the Southridge 13 with passes of eight and 16 yards by Br yant to Isaac O'Neal and Herren. Roberts then went for 11 yards to the 13 and a first down, but the Titans fumbled and Southridge recovered. Southridge took over at their 18. Titan freshman defensive lineman Brody Klem almost stopped the drive before it started as he broke through and sacked Allen for a 14-yard loss, but the Raiders fought back. A 25-yard pass from Allen to Carter Harris kept the drive alive. They eventually turned the ball over on downs when on fourth down from the Titan 14-yard line Beau Rose tipped Allen's pass away. Gibson Southern took over at the 14. They couldn't move the ball and went three and out. But on Southridge's first play, the ball came out and Ethan Ziliak for the second week in a row came up with the fumble late in the game for the Titans. "Our defense is really good, they cause a lot of fumbles and they always seem to fall right in front of me," said Ziliak. Roberts took over with four consecutive runs of 14, 5, 4 and 2 yards for a first down at the Southridge 13. Br yant then found Cole McKee on the sideline at the goal line, where he went over a defender and pulled down the pass for a touchdown and 21-14 lead with 6:01 left. Gibson Southern's defense came up big again. On third down Southridge jumped be- fore the snap making it third and 10. Brock Fauquher and Whitledge invaded the offen- sive backfield and dropped Raider quarterback Allen for a five yard loss forcing a punt. Roberts had runs of 21 and 14 to get ball into the red zone. A play later the Titans fumbled, but Br yant dove on it at the 19 for a four-yard loss to the 19 on fourth and eight. Novotny came in and hit a 36-yard field goal with 2:34 left, putting the game out of reach at 24-14. "Liam stepped in and played really well. He did what we needed him to do. In the first half we struggled up front on both sides of the ball. When there is a guy three yards deep in our backfield there aren't a lot of running or pass plays that are going to be suc- cessful ," said Hart. "I thought when we start- ed protecting him better it al- lowed him to play better," said Hart.
