B-2 Tuesday, September 20, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Five Gibson Southern girls in top 18 By James Capozella Star-times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Seventh grader Lily Schmitt ran a 12:04.1 race to third place in the mid- dle school girls 3K South Knox Invita- tional this past Saturday. Schmitt was joined by Lucy Scherer (7, 12:15), So- phie Wright (9, 12:20), Abigayle Steck- ler (11, 12:43) and Isabella Simpson (18, 12:53) in the 14-team event. Gracie Williams (28, 13:02), L ydia Conner (33, 13:17), Ava Fr yman (59, 13:57), Ramsie Grigsby (94, 14:40), Gracie Bratton (110, 15:07), Sadie Hall (117, 15:21), Naomi Hutchinson (139, 15:56), Greenlee Powers (154, 16:30), Mia Har ris (164, 16:57) were the next middle school finishers. Reese Sny- der (165, 16:59), Rebekah Hutchinson (195, 19:05) and Allison Waters (196, 19:24) were also finishers for Gibson Souther n. The St. James Cougars had three girls place in the middle school race including Jemma Kempf who clocked 14:16.1 for 75th place. Nora Wilzbach- er and Aislyn Leonard finished 95th and 97th clocking 14:46.7 and 14:47 respectively. WILSBACHER RUNS 11TH FOR ST. JAMES Matt Wilsbacher ran a 10:47 to 11th place in the invitational and was the second fastest seventh grader in Sat- urday's 14-team invitational. He was also just 10 seconds out of fifth among 264 r unners. Fifth grader Adam Wils- bacher finished second for the team and 56th overall with a 12:01 time. Ty Dewig ran a 12:40 to 94th place and Sam Wright finished in 104th with a time of 12:54. Jonah Kempf finished in 13:43 and 133rd and Per r y Hipp was 151st in 14:04. Henr y Mann placed 228th in 16:20 and Rolen Weber was 248th in 18:18. RUNYAN LEADS MIDDLE SCHOOL TITANS Reece Runyan took 19th in 10:57 to lead Gibson Souther n middle school- ers followed by Aidan Alston in 24th (11:09) and Raylan Boop who placed 29th in 11:16. Isaac Mar vel was 47th in 11:47.7 followed by Coleton McIn- tyre (51, 11:53), Gavin Schwar tz (72, 12:16), Maverick Reising (74, 12:22), Carson Smith (79, 12:29), Carson McIntyre (112, 13:08), Grady Mow- rer (146, 13:57), Adam Spindler (171, 14:41), Lawson Snyder (193, 15:17), Lucas Ivy (207, 15:39) and Waylon Atchison (214, 15:49), Also in the 264 r unner event were Reuben Hutchin- son (212, 15:58), Jack Anderson (227, 16:17), Luke Estep (229, 16:24) and Ian Alston (230, 16:25). Titan tennis beats Washington 4-1 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys ten- nis team beat Washington 4-1 last Tuesday. The Titans' Jake Deckers came from behind at number one singles after dropping the first set to Washington senior Jayden Meredith 6-3, and ral- lied to win the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-1. Landon Kiesel at number two singles rolled over Wash- ington's Elijah Parsons 6-1, 6-1. At number three singles Eliott Church won 6-4, 6-0 over Bryan Martinez of Washington. Titans Grant Wade and Lucas Church at number two doubles lost only one game in their match as they won 6-1, 6-0 over Ryan Emmick and Mayden Tomey. Kiesel brothers John and Noah lost a heartbreaker in tie- breaker in the third set. The Kiesels beat Alex Mayers and Brycen Neidigh 6-4 in the first set. They fell 4-6 to Washing- ton in the second. After a 6-6 tie the third set it came down to a tie- breaker, won by the Hatchet duo. In junior varsity play Brayden Aldredge beat Austin Clark 6-4, Isaiah and Agee in doubles beat Ezra and Bane 6-4 while Noah and Neidig of Gibson Southern beat Mark and Douglas 6-4. All three ear ned all con- ference honors. Sperling got of f to a good star t with a birdie on her first hole, the par 5 first. She then birdied the tricky four th hole, that features a tee shot over water to a di- agonal fair way and woods on the left. Hughes got hot in the middle of the front nine with back- to-back birdies on the long par 4 fifth and the par 5 sixth holes. Katelyn Walker and Adr yauna Redden both shot 47 to round out the T itans' 165 score. This year's competition star ted on September 3. But about an hour after they teed of f, a strong storm hit the Montgomer y area, forc- ing play to stop after four holes. They couldn't replay on a Saturday the 10th and because there are 13 teams they would not be able to complete 18 holes after school. The sectionals star t on September 17 so it had to be played during the week. The competition was cut to nine holes and ever yone star ted over. The team results were: 1) Gibson Souther n 165, 2) Mt.
