Remember those on our prayer list, the shut-ins and our lost loved ones. Paul had a dramatic conver- sion and suffered for his faith in Christ. He led many people to Jesus, even while in prison. Yet Paul pleaded with the Lord three times to remove the thorn in his flesh. God responded, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (II Corinthians 12:9). Every Chrisstian has wres- tled with the mysteries of God such as why bad things happen to good people. We believe in all of god's attributes, especially in His sovereignty, love and faith- fulness. Yet, we wrestle daily with unanswered questions. In the end, we accept that God is God and knows what is best for us. This is the essence of faith. "By and by, when the morning comes, when the saints of God are gathered home. We'll tell the story how we've overcome, for we'll understand it better by and by" (Charles Albert Tindley (1905). "Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him" (Psalms 30:5). Mission Statement: New Be- ginnings: What would Jesus do? We will strive to be more like Je- The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 14, 2022 D-1 A picture's meaning can express 10,000 words A Chinese proverb says, "A Picture's Meaning Can Express Ten Thousand Words," (people wrongly translated it: a picture is worth one thousand words). Oc- casionally, a picture comes along that goes beyond just capturing an event; the photograph sym- bolizes and often defines an era. It becomes a pictorial represen- tation of the thoughts, feelings and the struggles associated with the time. For example: the U.S. Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi on 23 Febru- ary 1945. It needs no explanation. With virtually everyone own- ing a cellphone and connected to the web, we can flash pictures instantly all over the world minus content. Yet pictures alone can be misleading. In recent years, some iconic photos have set off riots and caused widespread mayhem. What follows is a story about an iconic picture that had a happy ending. In 1936, at the height of the Depression, Dorothea Lange was a photographer with the Farm Security Administration. In early 1936, she was concluding a month's trip photographing migratory farm labor—and their plight—in California. At Nipomo, she finds an appallingly large, squalid campsite of nearly 2,500 It is time again to put words to paper and hope it makes a little sense and that someone gets some enjoyment from the effort. It has been a pleasure writing my article each week and I do my best not to bring people down but to uplift their spirits with my thoughts. We all read in the newspa- per that Andy and John have sold their papers to another person who sounds as though he doesn't have too many plans to make big changes to our newspaper. With all the apps in use today a once a week paper would be ver y dif- ficult to produce which would be as quick as facebook. I enjoy reading the details of what has happened during our week because The Press Dispatch has always had the rest of the stor y and it starts making more sense. The Press Dispatch deser ves a big thank you for their efforts and community support. My how time changes things. I usually take my wife whereever she wants to go to get her something for her birthday. Many years ago I bought her something I thought she would enjoy only it was something she could use in the house and would make things easier for her. To make a long stor y shorter we ended up in a heated dis- cussion about it and I started making sure to take her so she wouldn't be disappointed. This year she chose a portable carpet cleaner. So you can see Why does it say, 'it repented the Lord? "Why does Genesis 6:6 say 'it repented the LORD that He had made man' if He knew in advance how sinful man would get?" You may be thinking that the word "repent" there means God regretted He made man, and my dictio- nar y says "regret" can mean "a looking back with dissat- isfaction." This cannot be the meaning here, however, for it is not possible that God would be dissatisfied with anything He has done. Like all words, repent can have different meanings. My dictionar y defines it as "to feel pain, sorrow, or regret for something one has done." The word "or" here suggests that God didn't regret making man, He rather felt pain and sorrow for having done so. The way the verse is worded makes this clear. It doesn't say the Lord repented mak- ing man, as it would if He re- gretted it. It says it repented the Lord, it pained Him, for their sin caused Him sorrow. The rest of the verse verifies this interpretation when it ex- plains, "and it grieved Him at His heart." Sin still grieves the Lord, even after we are saved, so "grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption" (Eph. 4:30).
