SEPT. 5 TH TH Teen travels to Tanzania on summer mission trip Traveling to Africa may be a dream for many people, but one Shelby teen brought the dream to reality over her summer vacation. Bailey Earle, age 13, went to Tanzania from June 30 – Aug. 5 with an organization named Teen Missions International, which is based in Merritt Island, FL. Before they left for Africa, Earle's team took part in a "boot camp" in Florida to ready them for their trip. "During the training they get to know their teammates, live in a tent without electricity, learn to do laun - dry and bathe out of a bucket, and take classes on construction and other needed skills," says Bailey's mother, Amber. Each summer, Teen Missions International has about 10 differ - ent mission locations. Teens choose from these options and are grouped into teams. "Bailey had a strong desire to serve in Africa and originally chose the Rwanda team," says Amber. Due to Covid restrictions, Bailey's team was rerouted to Tanzania. "Bailey had been on a mission trip last year to Honduras, and this year she just really wanted to go to Africa," says Amber. While in Tanzania, Bailey and her team completed many projects. They plant - ed more than 200 banana trees and 50 citrus trees. They were also involved in digging an irrigation system, pouring concrete around the bottom of a house to prevent erosion, and con - structing the foundation and half of a church building. "They also visited seven different villages where they were able to perform skits and puppet shows and interact with the children and people who lived in the villages," says Amber. Bailey says her sum - mer in Africa has had a big impact on her life. "Serving in Africa helped me appreciate everything I have," says the teen. "My favorite part was interacting with the people who lived in the village we stayed in. It was great to do something that you know will make other peoples' lives better."
