"The team is doing well. Getting better with each match," said Coach Phil Knust. "We are tr ying to get the players to take our instr uction and apply it quicker to improve as much as possible and get ready for high school ten- nis," said Knust. He also said they are ac- cepting new players. "You just need a physical on file with school or bring a com- pleted physical form and complete a family ID with the school," said Knust about joining the middle school tennis team. They are 1-3 on the sea- son. They opened with Forest Park. Eli Keeker, playing number one singles, won the first round match 8-7. Tyler Collins at number two lost 4-8. Llinkyn Knust lost 3-8 and in doubles, Kade Benner and Joshua Smith fell 4-8. In second round matches, Kyle Benner won 6-1, while Eli Keeker and Knust won 6-3 in doubles and Andy Johnson and Joshua Smith won 4-2. On August 25 they played South Knox and in first round singles competition Keeker won 8-3, Collins 8-2 and Knust fell 8-7. Benner and Smith in dou- bles lost 8-6. In the second round match- es, Andy Johnson in singles lost 8-2. In doubles, Johnson teamed with Collins to win 6-4 while Keeker and Knust won 4-0. They played Vincennes Lincoln on August 28. Keek- er won 8-2 at number one singles with Collins and Smith falling 8-4 and 8-1. In doubles, Benner and Knust teamed to win 8-3, with Smith and Johnson losing a doubles match 8-2. In second round competi- tion Collins won 6-0. Keeker and Benner won in doubles 6-2 and Knust and Johnson fell 6-0. the momentum. Senior Isaac Marchino re- covered a fumble from Chase Jones to set up the Chargers at their own 47. After a cou- ple of short runs the Charger drive stalled on third and 4 when Jagar Dent was stopped for no gain. With the first quarter wind- ing down the Peyton Howald punt gave the Braves the ball at the Tecumseh 34 yard line with Tecumseh leading 7-0. As the second quarter got under way, the Braves ran for 22 yards on a quarterback keeper, but again the Charger defense stepped up. Three plays later the Chargers forced an incomplete pass on fourth and six for the turnover on downs. With Pike Central taking over after a big defensive play, Tecumseh's defense made a big play of its own. Matthew Meadows was intercepted on third and seven for a 44-yard 'pick six.' The kick was no good. Tecumseh led Pike Cen- tral 13-0 at the 7:12 mark of the second quarter. Trailing by two touch- downs midway through the second quar ter, the of fense put together its best drive of the night. On second and 11, Meadows hit Braden Howald for 48 yards, giving Pike Central a first down at the Tecumseh 39. Jagar Dent busted a r un for 10 yards, but a delay of game penalty made it third down. Meadows completed a pass to Dent for 18 yards for the conversion deep in Tecum- seh ter ritor y. The Chargers offense ap- peared to be stalled when they were stuffed for no gain and sacked for a short loss. On fourth and 18 from the Te- cumseh 32, the Chargers con- verted. Meadows hit Howald on a 24-yard pass. The Char- gers again appeared destined to stall with a third and goal from the nine, but Meadows hit Dent in the flat for a nine- yard touchdown with the half winding down. The conver- sion failed and Tecumseh led Pike Central 13-6 at the half. Tecumseh started the sec- ond half at its own 35-yard line, driving the ball 14 yards before Senior Corey Goep- pner recovered a Druw Du- pont fumble at the Charger 49. Three short runs resulted in a Peyton Howald 32-yard punt. Tecumseh mishandled the punt, which backed them up inside their own 15-yard line. With a tight game midway through the third quarter, the Braves turned to senior tailback Chase Jones who ac- counted for 60 yards on 4 runs in the ensuing touchdown drive. Jones' nine-yard touchdown run and extra point put the Braves up 20-6 with just less than 4 minutes to go in the third quarter. The Chargers would man- age a first down on the en- suing drive, but an incom- plete pass on third and nine would force a punt, giving the Braves the ball at their own 22. Three plays later Dent tackled the Braves ball carrier for a loss, forcing a four th down. The Chargers got the ball near midfield af- ter the punt, but were unable to move the ball. Tecumseh would go on to add two more scores in the fourth quarter on a Druw Du- pont 43-yard run and a Chase Jones 12-yard run. Final score: Tecumseh 33 Pike Central 6. Coach Brashear said while losing is tough, his young team fought hard. "Defensive- ly, I thought other than a few breakdowns…our boys played really well. Offensively, I've got to get some things figured out. Overall, no one wants to win more than I do, but I thought we grew up tonight. I was really proud of the effort from A to Z."
