Titan tennis beats PC and Wood By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern tennis beat Pike Central on Monday and Wood Memorial on Tues- day. Gibson rolled over Wood Memorial 5-0 on Tuesday. Jake Decker at number one singles for the Titans pulled out a three set win over Gavin Bigham. Decker took the first set 6-2, but then lost 6-2 in the second set before rallying for a 6-3 win in the third set. Landon Kiesel at number two singles for the Titans rolled over Alton Falls 6-1, 6-2, while Lucas Church at num- ber three won 6-0, 6-0 over Lathan Maikranz. Eliott Church and John Kiesel at number one doubles claimed a 6-1 win in the first set, but then had to go to a tiebreaker in the second set, which they won 7-2. Grant Wade and Noah Kie- sel at number two doubles beat Carter Lee and Jacob Henr y 6-0 and 6-2. Titans win 4-1 over Chargers The Titans won 4-1 over Pike Central on Monday as they won both doubles matches and collected two for feits. Titans Elliott Church and John Kiesel beat Adon Lem- on and JJ Belmore 6-2, 6-2 at number one doubles, while Grant Wade and Noah Kie- sel were beating Nate Car ter and Kaden Engler t 6-1, 6-1. Landon Kiesel and Lucas Church picked up for feits at two and three singles. Jake Decker at number one singles fell in a closely contest- ed three-set match at number one singles. Decker lost the first set 6-3, then came back and won the second set 6-3, but lost 6-4 in the third and de- ciding set. B-2 Tuesday, August 30, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Boys soccer beats Wood 2-0 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys soccer team picked up their second win of the season over Wood Memorial on Thursday night. Jonah Loveless scored in the first half and Blake Elpers in the second half to lead the Titans to a 2-0 win both scores were off of assisted by Vann Rose. "We are pretty young all around, we only have four se- niors," said Titan Coach Josh Higgins. "I think over all they did pretty good. The injury bug has hit us pretty hard. We had two or three guys have to come off the field," said Higgins. Gibson Southern domi- nated the time of possession during the match, having con- trol of the ball nearly 80 per- cent of the game. "We lacked a little on the ex- ecution. We could have scored a few more goals, but we are young. We aim to be a little better by end of season," said Higgins. Gibson Southern will head in the heart of the Pocket Ath- letic Conference season next week when they play Heritage Hills on Tuesday and South Spencer on Thursday. Ten of their next 12 matches will be with PAC teams. "The PAC is going to be su- per competitive this year," said Higgins. William Redden gets to a ball being contested by Wood Memorial. Vann had two assists in the Titans 2-0 win over Wood Memorial on Thursday night. Tennis drops match to HH 3-2 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's boys tennis fell 3-2 to Heritage Hills on Thursday. The Titans doubles teams both won, while Heritage Hills won all three singles matches. John Kiesel and Noah Kie- sel played together at num- ber one doubles and beat the Patriots Kayden Bell and Braden Pruitt 6-4, 6-2. The Kiesels used a strong ser ve and volley game with ver y few errors to beat the Heri- tage Hills duo. Noah Kiesel got 81 per- cent of his first ser ves in and hit seven volley winners with only seven ground stroke er- rors. John Kiesel had 13 vol- ley winners at the net . In number two doubles, Grant Wade and Lucas Church rolled over Hayden Gogel and Carter Lashley 6-2, 6-0. The Titan duo used a solid groundstroke game to their advantage. Church and Wade had only 11 ground- stroke errors in the two sets while their Patriot opponents had 35 errors. Wade had eight winning volleys and Church had seven. In singles action, Jake Decker at number one sin- gles fell 6-0, 6-1. At number two, Landon Kiesel lost 6-2, 6-3 to Matthew Kress, and Eliott Church fell to Kevin Dilger 6-2, 6-1. In junior varsity action the Titans' Luke Stoll beat Colt Caswell 6-0, Land Schmitt beat Nathan McDowell 6-5, Brayden Alldredge and Dae- gan Schafer beat Mason Summer and Noah Marshall 6-5.
