South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, August 30, 2022 B-3 Junior Titans sweep Tecumseh in football Thursday The South Gibson Jr. Ti- tans swept Tecumseh on Thursday night in football as both the seventh and eighth grade teams had decisive wins at L ynnville. Isaac Dill had two long r uns for touchdowns as the seventh graders won 24-8. Dill had breakaway r uns of 46 and 65 yards and topped both of those r uns with two-point conversions. He had 184 yards on the night. Tucker Deputy took it in from one yard out for the Ti- tans' other touchdown. Dill completed a pass to Luke Mallor y for the other PAT. On defense, Deputy had eight tackles and Jaxson Kiefer had seven as the Jr. Titans held Tecumseh to one touchdown. The 7th grade is 1 - 0. In the eighth grade con- test, the Jr. Titans won 28 - 0. Eli Foster turned an inter- ception into a touchdown for an early lead. Caden Roch- leau then hit Collin Higgin- botham for the PAT. Rochleau added a 12-yard touchdown run and the Ju- nior Titans were up 14 - 0. Foster got into the end zone a second time on a 20- yard run. Rochleau ran in with the PAT. Cole Ridens closed the scoring with a late five-yard touchdown. On defense, Peyton John- son, Eli Foster and Deacon Dressler each had 10 tack- les. The Junior Titan pass defense was oppor tunistic with three interceptions by Collin Higginbotham, Coo- per Townsend and Foster. The Jr. Titans will travel to Henderson County next Thursday. Coach Chris May and Ron Kahle were happy with both groups. "It is nice to get the first wins. We will need to be ready next week for Henderson County," said May. Lady Titan golfers shoot lowest score of the year By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern's girls golf team shot their lowest score of the year to beat North Posey on Thursday. The T itans blistered Cambridge for a team 168. Haley Hughes was med- alist with a 38. The top four all shot 45 or better. Adr yauna Redding had a 42, Vanessa Schmitt 43 and Madilyn Sperling 45. Kate- ly Walker had a 55. North Posey shot a 234. Another three and out forced by the Titan defense that saw Ethan Ziliak and Lewis drop Elijah Jennings for a three yard loss and then freshman defensive lineman Brody Klem dropped him for no gain and got the Titans the ball back quickly setting up Rober ts first touchdown. "I thought our entire de- fensive line played great. When you looked at the tackle sheet our D-Line was making plays. When they are doing that, they are playing great," said Har t. Two possessions later the Titans stuffed a faked punt at- tempt and took over the ball at the Bulldog 19 yard line. A five yard loss on first down and an incomplete pass left them looking at third and 15. Rob- erts picked up 12 of it. Facing fourth and three Cam Novot- ny hit a 29 yard field goal on the third play of the second quarter for a 24-0 lead. On defense Klem again shot the gap and dropped Jennings for no gain on third down getting the Titans the ball back. Three plays later Rober ts ripped of f his second touch- down r un this time from 56 yards out, giving the Titans a 31-0 lead with 8:51 left. Gibson Southern would allow New Albany their sec- ond and third first down of the game with less than eight minutes to go in the first half, but eventually got them stopped at the Titans' 23 yard line when a for th and seven pass sailed wide of its intended receiver. On the second play of the following of fensive series Rober ts broke free for a 25- yard r un to the New Albany 48. After several r un plays Boyd hit Zach Butler in stride at about 12-yard line behind the defense and he waltzed into the endzone for 38-0 lead. The score meant the sec- ond half would be played with a r unning clock. Gibson Southern scored early in the four th quar ter and then the second string defense gave up a five yard touchdown r un by Jennings to make it 45-7. It is the second week in a row Gibson Southern has beaten a 5A team. Last week the Titans marched 68 yards in 1:24 to score with 5.8 sec- ond left for a 27-20 win over Terre Haute South. South beat Rich Central of Illinois 45-26. "We didn't give up a point with defensive star ters and on of fense we star ted scored ever y time but one. That is impressive. I thought we were in for another Terre Haute South type of game," said Har t. Titan JV football pounds out 36-6 win over THS Contributed story Gibson Southern's junior varsity beat Terre Haute South never trailing on their way to a 36-6 win on Saturday, August 20 in their season opener. Gibson Southern's defense led by junior linebacker Jack Rose and sophomore defen- sive backs Connor Wirey and Waylon Finney in the second- ar y dominated Terre Haute by not allowing a first down un- til midway through the third quarter. The offense was nearly as impressive. Sophomore uarterback Liam Br yant found the endzone three times in the game with his legs and also connected with junior wide receiver Maxx Wilson late in the first half to effectively seal the contest before the break. Br yant and the Titans scored on five of their seven posses- sions, controlling the tempo and wearing the Braves down up front with the excellent pass protection and run block- ing from the front five on the line. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Titans efficient- ly moved the ball down the field behind a Br yant run of 21 yards and two receptions by junior slot receiver Baker Calvert at ten yards a clip. Un- fortunately, first game jitters may have gotten the better the Titans before they could find the endzone when a THS defender came down with an interception in the endzone. The Titan defense forced a quick three-and-out. A Braves mis-snap left the punter scrambling and defen- sive end Nick Agee forced a fumble deep in Braves terri- tor y. Sophomore linebacker Max Wahl was able to recover and the Titans were gifted a short field inside the 20. Gibson Southern's offense capitalized on their second drive with a Br yant three- yard run for the first score of the game with just under four minutes remaining in the first frame. The Br yant to Wilson conversion pass was good, putting the Titans on the board with an 8-0 lead. Rose stymied the first play of the next Braves drive with a five-yard tackle for loss, lead- ing to another THS punt. Starting just past midfield, the Titan offense put together a 14-play drive to their second score of the game. Br yant peppered the field, delivering completions to three different receivers including a 23-yard reception by sophomore wide receiver Cam Novotny, two tosses to sophomore running back Chase Thaxton, and four more strikes to Wilson. The last pass to Wilson took GS down to the one, allowing Br y- ant to sneak the next snap into the endzone, and his second rushing touchdown of the day. The conversion pass to Novot- ny was good, extending the lead to 16-0. The Titan defense contin- ued their dominance on the next THS drive, this time showing off their skills in the secondar y. The first down jet sweep was busted up by Agee's penetration into the backfield and cleaned up for a tackle for loss by sophomore cornerback Connor Wirey. One play later Finney tracked down a pass from the opposite side of the field for an inter- ception, returning it 17 yards to the THS 26, setting the Ti- tans up again in prime field position. Gibson Southern was un- able to capitalize on the drive, and the Braves got the ball back on their own 20 after a THS interception in the end- zone. One the first play from scrimmage junior defensive end Deven Burger stopped the Braves runner in the back- field and sophomore lineback- er Seth Parsons cleaned up for a four-yard loss. Two plays later Burger hunted down the THS quarterback for a 13-yard sack, dropping him just short of a safety on the one-foot line. Gibson Southern started their next drive at mid-field af- ter the Braves punt. With less than 40 seconds remaining in the half Br yant threw a strike to Wilson on a post route for a score, putting the Titans up 22-0. The half ended with Jake Richter picking off the next THS pass deep in Titan terri- tor y and taking knee. Coming out of the half the Titan defense wasted no time getting back into the groove when junior tackle Aver y Ad- ams punched out a fumble from the Braves quarterback on the first play from scrim- mage. Sophomore corner- back Grant Stinson tracked down the bounding ball and pounced on it to give the Ti- tans possession on the Braves 45. Br yant marched Gibson Southern down the field with connections to Wilson and Novotny before hitting Calvert for a 20-yard catch and run to inside the 20. Novotny picked up a 12-yard reception down to the three, and Thax- ton punched it in for his first touchdown of the season. The conversion to Novotny was good making it 30-0. After two and a half quar- ters the Braves were finally able to move the chains on the stingy Titan defense behind a big 29-yard screen play to get into GS territor y for the first time, aided by a missed tack- le and a facemask penalty. A few plays later THS found the endzone to get themselves on the board and thwart the Ti- tans hope for a shutout. Soph- omore tackle Elijah Brown stuffed the conversion attempt in the backfield, leaving the score 30-6. Gibson Southern made their last drive count, going 79 yards and chewing up more than six minutes of clock to get their final score of the game. A 15-yard Thaxton run and 25-yard Br yant run put the Ti- tans at the Brave 10 yard line. Br yant hit paydirt on a de- signed run play with sopho- more offensive linemen Isaac Cavins and Brown pulling across the formation to clear the way. After scampering around the right side, Br y- ant slashed back through the defense and spun away from one would-be tackler to then will his way in for the score, dragging the last two defend- ers into the endzone. His third rushing touchdown of the day put the Titans up 36-6 where it remained for the victor y and a 1-0 start to the season. Passing: Liam Br yant 19 for 36 for 148 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT.
