SPORTS Titans trample Bulldogs 45-7 By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern scored on their first three posses- sions and held New Albany to just one first down in the first period on their way to a 45-7 romp, Friday night. It was the second straight week in a row the Titans have beat- en a 5A team. "I thought we played real- ly well. We were so physical of fensively and defensively. We were a lot more physi- cal than we were last week. We executed at a really high level and played pretty well," said Titan Coach Har t about the win. Quar terback Tanner Boyd had another stellar night leading the Titans. He com- pleted 17 of 20 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns, tailback Devan Rober ts had a highlight reel night rushing for 169 yards and two touch- downs in only 13 carries. "He is playing really well, making great decisions with the ball. He pushed the ball down field a couple of times this week. When he throws the ball with that efficiency it is always going to put us in a good spot," said Har t. Rober ts slashed the Bull- dog defense for two long touchdowns. His 32-yard touchdown on the second play of Gibson Southern's third possession was a dag- ger to the Bulldogs. He turned the corner and head- ed down the left sidelines, then made a hard cut back to the middle about 20 yards down field and raced into the endzone to give the Titans a 21-0 lead with 1:51 left in the first quar ter. The quick score came af- ter two long sustained drives by the Titans, who took the opening kick of f and picked apar t the New Albany de- fense in 11 plays. Boyd star t- ed the drive with a 22-yard pass to Isaac O'Neal. He hit Sean DeLong for nine years to the Bulldog 30. Boyd then ran to five-yard line. An illegal motion penalty backed the Titans up to the five, but two runs by Rober ts left them at third and goal from the one. On four th down Boyd was able to get the ball across the goal line for a 7-0 lead. Gibson Southern's defense forced a three out with nice plays by TJ Lewis and Brock Fauquhy on first and third downs. Gibson Southern took over at their own 47 yard line. Boyd star ted the drive with a 16 yard pass to O'Neal then three five yard runs in a row got them a first down at the 21 yard line. Rober ts broke free and scored, but it was called back by a holding penalty. It didn't matter two plays later as Boyd found O'Neal on the right side line and he took it into the endzone for a 14-0 lead with 6:35 still left in the second quar ter. Football Titans host inexperienced Washington team on Friday By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com After beating two 5A teams the Titan football team with host Pocket Athletic Confer- ence opponent Washington. Coach Har t praised his team's improvement from the first week to the second week, saying they played much more physically on both sides the ball. "It is easy to show up on Friday night fired up to play. What concerns me is, how do we prepare and practice Monday through Thursday? We have been getting better ever y day. We can't af ford to go backwards. We have three big weeks after this one. We have to have a great week of practice and continue to move for ward. We can't af- ford a dip going into this Fri- day. It is our first conference game. Getting better for the future is really impor tant," said Har t. Next week, Gibson South- ern will star t a tough stretch of their schedule, hosting South Warren of Bowling Green, the defending 5A Ken- tucky state champions. It was Titans' only loss last year. After that game, they will play Southridge, Heritage Hills and Mt. Vernon. All are improved PAC teams. So far this year, Gibson Southern's of fense has prov- en to be ver y efficient.
