SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, August 15 and 19, 1947 4-H'ers To Camp At State Park: Pike County 4-H'ers will have a joint camp with Gibson County at Shaka- mak State Park, August 18 -21. The camp will not be divided into two groups as previously planned. Bus- es will leave from the Petersburg Court House around 1 p.m. Monday, August 18. Voyles Purchases Gross Super Market: John Voyles, owner of the J-V Store in Petersburg assumed ownership of the Gross Super Market, Tuesday after purchasing the store and contents from Rose Gross. The consideration was not revealed. The change in ownership was a surprise to many in this area, though with Mrs. Gross now settled in Detroit it was apparent that a sale would be made, since James Gross had left about a month ago. Will Attend Fair School of Home Ec.: Barbara Ann Wood, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wood of Arthur, will attend the State Fair School of Home Economics, Au- gust 18th to August 21st. Her trip is sponsored by the County Home Ec. Clubs, whose executive committee considered all applications submit- ted by eligible girls for the award. Barbara was selected because of her outstanding record in 4-H Club work. He Walks 40 Paces and Dropped Dead: With death waiting a hundred feet away, midget auto racer Frank Stauber walks from his wrecked car after crashing into a canvas wall at Hanson Park Stadium, Chicago, where a wire slashed into his neck, nearly decapitating him. Stauber walked 40 paces after a picture was taken then dropped dead before his wife and 10,000 spectators. Births: To Mr. and Mrs. James Burton, a daughter, Cheryerl Kay, August 9. Mother is the former Phoebe Lee Woods of Winslow; To Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, a daughter, Sandra Lynn, Saturday, August 9; To Mr. and Mrs. Carl Breidenbaugh, of the Iva commu- nity, a son, Daniel Joseph; To Mr. and Mrs. Harold Traylor, of the Iva community, a son, Dennis Lee, Au- gust 8. Rod- imel, 23, Navy flyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Rodimel, of Wash- ington, was killed Thursday morn- ing, when his fighter plane crashed north of Whitehouse Field, near Jacksonville, Fla., Naval Air Station. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, August 16, 1962 Water Tank Repaired Again: Water in Winslow was turned off last Thursday afternoon for the purpose of patching another hole in the bottom of the water tank located just west of the Oak Hill cemetery on Goose Hill. The tank is in need of a completely new bot- tom. It has a 60,000 gallon capacity which exerts an enormous amount of pressure. Leo Williams, assisted by Ben Hayes did the cleaning and repair work. The plans for the new water system call for replacing the bottom of the existing tank, which engineers claim is adequate for the needs of Winslow for some time to come. Williams, 66, died Tuesday, August 7, at his Glezen home. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, August 17, 1972 Petersburg Teacher Killed While Helping Move House: Ronald L. Bo- ger, 30, a highly esteemed teacher in Petersburg High School, met sud- den death by electrocution Tuesday, August 15 at 11:50 a.m. He was helping eight fellow work- ers for Buchta House Moving, move a house from the country into West- phalia when lightning rods on the house came into contact with high voltage wire. They were three miles northwest of Westphalia and had to go around a tree by the side of the road which extended out over the road. The house tipped a little, caus- ing the lightning rods to touch the 7,400 volt high wire. Mr. Boger was under the house and had hold of a metal come-along handle (hoist) and received the full voltage charge when electric- ity came down the lightning rod ground wire. He was given mouth to mouth resuscitation but to no avail. Under the house with him at the time were Alonzo Robling of Otwell who was next to him, and Mark Whitman of Winslow. They were not touching any metal. Mr. Boger had farmed during his previous summer vacations. This year in addition to farming he had worked for Elmer Buchta Co., and was going to quit in two more days, which would have finished out the week as their week ends on Thurs- day, to get ready to resume his teaching job. This year would have made sev- en years teaching social studies in PHS where he was regarded as an exceptionally fine teacher and fa- vorite among the teachers and stu- dents. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997 Scott and Debbie Harris Start Elk Ranch: Take a tour of Scott and Debbie Harris' Velpen property and it isn't unusual to see a variety of an- imals including dogs, horses, ducks and geese roaming around on the 50 -acre spread. But look closely at an enclosed three-acre pasture near the Harris' home and there is some- thing unusual to be noted. Blending into the trees which dot the area is a small herd of elk. "We purchased this property about two years ago especially so we could raise elk," Harris ex- plained. "We used to live in Holland and I've been with Holland Dairy for 20 years," he said. Elliott Places First Runner-Up In Jasper Strassenfest Little Mister: Kyle Elliott, seven year old son of Jeff and Kim Elliott of Jasper, placed first runner-up in the Jasper Strass- enfest Little Mister Contest on July 30. He was one of 10 boys ages sev- en and eight competing for the title. Pike County Girls Place in Miss Sweet Corn Pageant: Jalyn Car- ter, of Petersburg was named first runner up and Miss Congeniality in the Miss Sweet Corn pageant at Oakland City last Thursday night. Kimberly Aydelott, of Spurgeon, was named Second Runner-up. Ra- chel Wilson, of Oakland City was crowned Miss Sweet Corn. She is the daughter of Anthony and Lin- da Wilson. Carter is the daughter of Steve and Luzell Carter and Aydelott is the daughter of Gary and Carolyn Aydelott. Directors of the pageant were Melissa Richards and Vali Shoultz. Marriages: Holly Craig and Todd Jenkins were married on Saturday, July 12, at Gatlinburg, Tenn.; Deb- orah A. Cates and Robert L. Fergu- son were married on Saturday, July 26, by Rev.
