Generally, the happiness that is pursued is the result of things that satisfy or fulfill some kind of desire. That fulfillment may be anything from a new pair of shoes, to a new family member, a new marriage, a new car, a bigger house, more money, etc. The newness is soon gone. Sometimes we confuse happiness with joy. Happiness is fleeting, it is temporary. Joy on the other hand is on-going; it sustains us even in difficult times. We may face tragedies, financial loss, physical pain and suffering, and many other things that rob us of happiness. But joy goes beyond those things; it gives us peace in the midst of our storms. It sustains us when everything around us is failing. The Bible says "the joy of the Lord is my strength." Allowing God to be at the center of our lives gives us strength, and his strength gives us joy in the worst of circumstances. Seeking God, learning and growing in him is what we do at First Christian Church. When our enemy re- alizes he isn't going to get us to return to outright sin, he will do what he can to cause us to lose our focus and be distracted in an attempt to bring us low or cause us to stumble. God is so faithful to help us to remember our song: "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His won- der ful face, and the things of ear th will grow strangely dim in the light of His glor y and grace."
