Charger golfers beat Heritage Hills to start 2-0 By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central girls golf team beat Heritage Hills at Christmas Lake golf course on Monday to move to 3-0 on the season. The Lady Chargers shot a 239 on the hardest nine at Christmas Lake, beating the host's 242. Pike Central's Brailey Mills in her first match this season had the team low score of 54. Charger Coach Jarrod Gideon said that in- cluded six or seven penalty strokes. Senior Grace Good- paster shot a 59 for the Char- gers, while Chloe Williams and Addy Russell shot 62 and 64 for the team total of 239. Other Chargers competing were Aubrey McGowan with a 68, Sophia Boyd 70 and Ke- leia Hartke 72. Pike Central shot seven strokes better in their second outing than they did in their first match when they beat Tecumseh. "It was a little bet- ter. Christmas Lake is a lot tougher than Prides Creek and it was hot out there," said Gideon of the temperatures in the 90s with the heat index over 100 degrees on Monday. Former PC coaches Anderson, Sandifar named to Indiana Sports Hall of Fame By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Two Pike Central coaches in the 1970s have been named to the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame. Basketball coach Mike Sandifar and wrestling coach Marc Anderson both coached at Pike Central in the late 1970s. Sandifar led the Chargers basketball team in 1976-77 and 77-78 seasons. They were 8 -13 in the first season after start- ing 1-11 and finished 5-2 in the PAC with a team of two se- niors, Max Elliott and Donnie Phillips and 10 sophomores that featured Tim Barrett, Bri- an Falk, Kenny Wells, Brick Briscoe, Ted Klipsch and Curt Davis. In the second season, they were 18-3 overall and 7-0 in the PAC. Sandifar said both of their losses were with four starters out of the lineup. A controversial loss in the sec- tional to Loogootee still sticks with Sandifar more than 40 years later. He can describe in detail nearly ever y nuance of the last 15 seconds of play. Here is his description of those 15 seconds. We were tied with 15 seconds to play, when John Bush, the of- ficial, called a foul on us. Loogootee went to the line for a one-and-one. Brick Briscoe, with 7,200 fans screaming, yelled to Ted Klipsch to make sure to block out. Loogootee missed the free throw and Klipsch grabbed the rebound, and we quickly pushed the ball up the court. With seven seconds on the clock, John Bush blew whistle and stopped play. He said Brick Briscoe had yelled to Klipsch after he had handed the Loogootee player the ball to shoot the free throw; therefore, Loogootee would get to shoot again. I told him that was a dead ball foul, so there should be 15 seconds on the scoreboard clock. He said he could not put time back on the clock. I told him it was a dead ball foul; consequently, he could put the time back on the clock. He told me they were going to re-shoot the foul shot, and if I said another word, he would T me up. Loogootee made the free throws this time to tie the score, and we pushed the ball up the court for a final shot. We had already called our play before the Loogootee player went to the free throw line. We ran our Wing Post option, and it worked to perfection. Tim Barrett pushed the ball up the floor and passed the ball to Ted Klipsch and Ted shot the ball from the free throw line el- bow with about two seconds on the clock. The ball was nothing but net, and the buzzer sounded, giv- ing us the win to put us in the sectional championship with Washington and later Mr. Bas- ketball Steve Bouchie. However, John Bush waved the shot of f, telling us that Ted Klipsch's shot had taken place after the buzzer, which it did not. He told me we were going overtime and if I said anything, he would T me up... We lost in overtime... I had great young people to work with, and Dr. Jerry Hathaway and Howard Briscoe were great administrators to work with. They cared about the students, and I believed everything they did was to make the school and the students the best," -Mike Sandifar 83 HWY 231 S, JASPER 812-482-9696 WWW.HOPFOUTDOOR.COM 6000 E MORGAN AVE, EVANSVILLE 812-477-2468 • 844-477-2468 WWW.HOPFEQUIPMENT.COM
