Far from being an act of interplanetar y graffiti, though, it's there for scien- tific purposes. And it won't be there forever – scientists plan to bring the marked rock home someday to be studied in a laborator y. Roger Wiens, professor of earth, atmospheric, and plane- tar y sciences in the College of Science at Purdue University and an expert in Mars robot- ics technology, led the team that built SuperCam, one of Mars rover Perseverance's most innovative and effective tools. Recently, SuperCam used its laser to etch the first letter – L – on the Martian sur- face to learn more about Mars' lost magnetic field. "Humanity has only ever had one planetar y magnetic field to study as recorded in rocks – Earth's," Wiens said. "Being able to study Mars – which we think once had an Earth-like magnetic field and lost it – will increase our knowledge by a whole new planet." Scientists on the Persever- ance rover team are collecting rock samples – drill cores in cylindrical tubes – to be re- turned to Earth by the next mission. But to understand Mars' magnetic field, they need to know how the sample was oriented when it was in the rock on Mars. The letter L is the easiest way – the way with the least number of strokes – to record how the rock was aligned on the planet. Scientists will com- pare the marking on the rock itself once it arrives on Earth with the marking as it was laid out in photos taken by the rov- er as it marked the rock. Comparing the rock sam- ple's alignment with Mars' poles with qualities of the rock itself will give the researchers insight into the histor y of the planet's magnetic field, which is currently ver y weak com- pared to Earth's. "We don't yet fully under- stand our own magnetic field on Earth – how it formed and how it changes," Wiens said. "Understanding Mars' mag- netic field might help us un- derstand our own. A planet's magnetic field protects it from cosmic radiation. Mars' loss of its magnetic field contributed to the loss of its atmosphere and liquid surface water." Area reunion OHS CLASS OF '72 REUNION Otwell High School Class of 1972 will have their reunion on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Ireland Chicken Place. Two men charged with theft and auto theft By James Capozella A 2 a.m. August 8 call to dispatch concerning a truck parked in the middle of CR 1100S, resulted in several theft charges following an investi- gation by Pike County Deputy Kane Osgatharp, Sgt. Jared Simmons and Officer Taylor Deffendoll. Alek Duane Dill, 24, 201E CR 475S, Winslow and Levi Montgomer y, 23, 500 W War- nock, Lot D1, Princeton, were both charged with theft less than $750, auto theft and un- authorized entr y of motor ve- hicle after officers inter viewed several individuals found walking on CR 1100S just east of SR61. When officers arrived they found a juvenile in a Chevrolet truck belonging to Alek Dill. Two individuals were located walking near SR61 and CR 1100S who said they were just out walking around. During an inter view with Montgomer y it was deter- mined that he and Dill had taken a grill and headlights off a truck belonging to Rick Bai- ley and hid them in the weeds. Dill said he had mostly watched Montgomer y take parts off the truck but did help Montgomer y and a juve- nile loosen some bolts. The juvenile said they took both headlights and the grille off the truck and put them in the weeds and added that they were for Montgomer y's truck Roger Wiens; a planetar y scientist and Mars rover expert at Purdue University with a topographical model of Mars and a photo of Curiosity.
