FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main St., Petersburg SUNDAY, MARCH 13, 2022 Chargers fall to South Knox in hard-fought game By Andy Heuring Pike Central lost a hard- fought game at South Knox last Tuesday night. Pike Cen- tral played well during the first half, leading most of the first quarter and much of the half, but seemed to run out of gas the in third quarter before falling 58 -46. "I thought we played hard and competed. We played through some of the tired legs, which we didn't do against Washington. But we just ran out of gas in the sec- ond half," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. It was the fourth game in five days and third straight road game for the Chargers. South Knox is a solid team. The win improved their re- cord to 14-8 on the season. Pike Central stands 9 -12 head- ing into the sectional. Pike Central was led by sophomore Quade Morton with 16 points. He was joined in double figures by Julian Gish with 11, and Kendric Sor- gius with 10. Scoring was hard to come by early in the game. It wasn't until the 5:10 mark of the first quarter when Morton drove the lane and hit a cutting Bra- den Howald on the baseline for the game's first basket. South Knox answered with a Dakota Chandler offensive rebound put back, to make it 2-2. Chandler led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points. Pike Central got to a 9 -5 lead on a Morton drive, fol- lowed by a steal he turned in- to a layup at 2:30 left in the quarter. South Knox got their first lead at 10 -9 on a three point- er, by Logan Fischer, with 50 seconds left. It was his first of three in the night. A fter an exchange of pos- sessions, Pike Central got the ball with 30 seconds to go. They held it until inside 10 seconds, and Morton drove the lane and then dished to Sorgius on the left wing. Sor- gius hit the jumper for a 11-10 led, seconds before the buzz- er. Peyton Howald, who had seven points on the night, started the second quarter with a three-pointer, for a 14- 10 lead. Chandler cut it 14-12. Then, Fischer drilled a three from the left side to South Knox a 15 -12 lead. It was fast paced the next four minutes as a Morton's three gave the Chargers a 17- 15 lead. Chandler hit two free- throws to tie the game with 3:18 left. Dylin Mueler hit a three to put the Spartans up 20 -17, and Cody Dawson scored in the paint, giving South Knox their biggest lead so far at 22-17. Again Sorgius came through for the Chargers. He took a pass in the corner and drilled a three at the buzzer to make it 22-20 at half. Pike Central started the second half with a 15 foot jumper from Gish. It was his first field goal of the game to tie it. A fter a South Knox basket, Sorgius scored on a drive to tie it at 24-24 with 6:45 left in the third. But over the next four minutes the wear and tear on Pike Central playing four games in five days, with three of them on the road, be- gan to show. Pike Central's shots quit falling and South Knox started getting open shots. Bailey excels at Franklin College Bailey swam lifetime best times in each of her individual events at Heartland Championships When Quin Bailey left Pike Central High School in 2018, she had no idea what she was getting into when she de- cided to join the Franklin College Swim- ming and Diving program. Quite nervous, she was not sure she was prepared for the rigors of college swimming, but time and perseverance paid off as the seasons went by. The Franklin women's team has been a presence at NCA A DIII Nationals since 2017. They have churned out 67 individu- al conference champions, 36 conference relay titles, and nine All-Americans in the last 13 years. Since 2017, the team has been undefeated, going 48 -0 in du- al meets and has won 10 conference ti- tles in a row. This past weekend at the 2022 Heart- land Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, Bailey swam lifetime best times in each of her individual events, and added even more impres- sive swims in relays. In the 50 freestyle, Bailey posted a 25.98 in the prelims and finished in ninth place, while in the 100 freestyle, she fin- ished in eighth place in a time of 56.20. However, it was the 200 freestyle where Bailey had found the most success and a level of confidence; far from her days as a new freshman in college. Earlier in the season, Coach Hen- dricks asked Bailey if she remembered her first swim in the 200 freestyle of her college experience. Expecting her not to remember the time, he reminded her she swam a 2:27 in her first race and end- ed that year with a 2:12.46. Just a year before, she went 2:18.02 as a senior at Pike Central grad Quin Bailey grabs a breath between strokes as she competes for Franklin College's swim team. She is the daughter of Chris and Katina Bailey of Petersburg. Charger Julian Gish shoots over South Knox's Thurston Wirth for two of his 11 points last Tuesday. Pike Central led much of the first half, but ran out of gas in the second half losing 58-46. A mighty move Shawn Conder grimaces as he tries to throw his opponent to his side. Conder eventually prevailed and won his match against Southridge on Saturday during the Pike Central hosted meet. See more photos on page 6.
