Poplar Street, Petersburg In Paul's day, his "preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery" en- countered opposition on every hand. For faith- fully proclaiming the glorious message which had been committed to his trust, he was con- stantly made to bear affliction and reproach. In one of his earlier epistles we already find a long list of the perils and persecutions he had by then been called upon to endure (II Corin- thians 11:23-33) and this opposition, bitter and relentless, continued throughout his ministry. In his last letter, written from prison in Rome, he calls attention to the distinctive character of his message, and adds: "Wherein I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even unto bonds…" (II Timothy 2:7-9). The almost constant suffering to which the apostle of grace was subjected naturally had its effect upon timid souls. Some, who saw the truth and the glory of his message, lacked the courage to stand with him in making it known. Others, who had started with him were tempt- ed too, and some did, turn back. Of his first ap- pearance before Nero, the Apostle had to say: "At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: pray God that it may not be laid to their charge" (II Timothy 4:16). Stam Upcoming Events Ash Wednesday service at Winslow Christian Church March 2 Winslow Christian Church is hosting an Ash Wednes- day service at 7 p.m. EST on March 2. The service recog- nizes the beginning of Lent, the season leading up to Ho- ly Week. "If you have not attended such a service, please consider coming. It is very common among churches of all denominations, and it is brief. You may wear a mask throughout, as you feel the need," said Pastor Robert Asa. Ash Wednesday service at Main Street Presbyterian tonight The Main Street Presbyterian Church, 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg, will be conducting an Ash Wednesday service, March 2 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. A fter his famous expedition to the South Pole, Admiral Richard E. Byrd was riding on a train. A man asked him, 'What did you miss the most at the South Pole? ' Byrd replied he discussed that question with one of his team- mates in the camp, Jack O'Brien. Byrd asked, "Jack, what are you missing most from civi- lization? " Jack answered with no hesitation, "Temptation." Temptation began in the Garden of Eden— the Bible declares. Our forefather, Adam, dis- obeyed the commandment of God and plunged the world into the abyss of sin. The next sin recorded in the Bible is Cain murdered Abel. According to the FBI, there were 21,570 mur- ders in 2020. This shows an increase of 29 % from 16,669 murders in 2019 and the highest annual total since 1995. The sin of Cain contin- ues unabated. Humans have become very ad- ept at killing each other. By Genesis chapter 5, wickedness, evil, and violence was the order of the day. It is here God made a course cor- rection by sending a flood to destroy evil and wipe the slate clean; 'but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.' The surviving humans got the message somewhat and passed it on to their children, but the flood didn't put an end to sin and temptation. We don't have far to look to find temptation. Temptation is a part of life: temptation to stray from the values we hold dear, temptation to lie, cheat, and steal; to take shortcuts, and to avoid struggle. Many people don't mind traveling the broad way leading to destruction. Christians worldwide pray the Lord's prayer which peti- tions God to "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." How can we overcome temptation and be delivered from evil? The an- swer is Jesus! The church calendar shows it is time for Lent. The Christian church has been observ- As I'm sitting in front of my computer on Sunday afternoon I'll say good afternoon to you all. This has certainly been an eventful week full of things which are going to affect each person in the whole world. I can't imagine Russia would ever be mean enough to invade one of their neighbors but at the same time I was surprised in the defense the Ukraine people have put up against them. It doesn't look like Putin was counting on their resistance either. So far the United States has not got involved with the actual fighting but it is not over with. Putin has been setting the course so far, so this seems to be his war. His actions are ruining any relationship Russia ev- er had before his senseless actions. I do agree with the people who think the one world government is trying to be set in place, but only God knows the time schedule for things to come. CNN and Fox television has been giving a blow by blow account of this war and I believe they have the right to publicize it, but body count and other such statistics should be with- held. I hope it doesn't get to the nuclear bomb stage because we would all suffer from this. Pray for a conclusion to this senseless war Assembly of God RIVER OF LIFE 342 E.
