Playing with two starters on the side- lines Pike Central trailed 13 points at half-time, then stormed back in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead, but eventually lost 53-48 last Wednesday. On Monday, they ran into a buzzsaw in 18 -3, Washington falling 71-19. Against White River Valley, the Chargers were playing without Kya Sullivan and Brailey Mills, both, two of the Chargers top three scorers. "Mallory (Hunt)had a very good game for us. Without Brailey and Kya we knew we had to have her score, and she did." Hunt carried the load early, as she scored all eight of the Chargers first quarter points. Hunt had a game high, 19 points, with 12 of the Char- gers 15 first half points. They trailed 28 -15 at half-time. "We got off to a very slow start without Kya and Brailey. We were limited in what we could do, but in the second half we started pressing with half court trap and were able to turn them over and get transition or get to the foul line," said Charger Coach Kyle McCutchan. White River Valley took advantage of the Chargers slow start on offense, hitting five three-pointers. "It wasn't like our defense was poor. They were hot hitting five three-pointers," said McCutchan. Cannon, Goeppner runners-up at PAC Championship By Andy Heuring Pike Central had two runner-ups at the Pocket Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday. Seniors Jon Cannon, at 182 pounds, and Corey Goeppner were both finished in second place in the 13-team event, to lead Pike Central into eighth place overall. Goeppner, who is 36 -4 on the year, started with a forfeit in the first round. He then beat Southridge's Noah Owens, 4-0, to advance to the semi-finals. There he won by a ma- jor decision, 12-2, over Ashton Tin- dle, of South Spencer, to advance to the conference finals. In the finals, Goeppner faced Mt. Vernon's Derek Hollinger, who is 31- 2. One of Goeppner's four loses was to Hollinger, who prevailed again. Cannon, who is 35 -6, started the day with a major decision over Tel- ly City's Ethan Schraner, 13-3, in the first round. He then made quick work of Boonville's Blayze Marchand in just 22 seconds. In the semi-finals he beat Tecum- seh's Jared McKinley by an 8 -7 deci- sion. McKinley is 20 -5 on the season. Then in the finals, Cannon faced Reid Schroeder, of Southridge, who is 34-2 on the year. Schroeder pinned Cannon at the 4:10 mark. Griffin Boyd, at 120 pounds, placed sixth for the Chargers. Boyd's lost his opening match to Princeton's Jared Dunn, who is 32-2 on th season. He then beat Eli Mayes, of Boonville, by a 1-0 decision. Then, in the semi-final consolation match, he beat Elijah Brosmer, of Forest Park, by pin in the third period. In the fifth place match, Boyd lost a major decision 9 -1 to Heritage Hills' Garret Forler. Five other wrestlers placed eighth in the 13 team meet. They were Ryan Glad- ish, at 132; Adien McGiffen, at 138, Jayden Bolin, at 160, Paul Thompson, at 220, and Hayden Goins, at 285. Lady Chargers swim takes eighth at PAC By Andy Heuring Pike Central's girls' swim team, hampered by COVID problems, placed eighth in the Pocket Ath- letic Conference championships on Saturday. "We had some girls out with sick- ness and quarantined. It is what it is," said Charger Coach Jason McKinney. McKinney said if the girls miss- ing had been able to swim, they likely would have moved the team up at least two places. "The ones we had did a good job. I'm pleased with the outcome," said McKinney. Underclassmen had the two highest finishes for the Chargers. Freshman Alexis Oswalt placed fourth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:11.07. Oswalt also placed 11th in the 200 IM. Junior Jillian Bailey placed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 1:06.19 and was less than second out of third place. She also placed eighth in the 50 free with a time of 26.99. Jon Cannon, at 182 pounds, goes behind Ethan Schraner, of Tell City. Cannon beat Schraner, 13-3, on his way to a second place finish in the PAC on Saturday. Charger, 195 pounder, Corey Goeppner rides Southridge's Noah Owens on his way to a 4-0 deci- sion over Owens.
