Mark Wade, Deacon FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 Sunday morning worship service at 10 :30 a.m. Guilt and Shame Several years ago, a young woman came to my office and with a voice of desperation, asked how she could deal with guilt and shame. She had been reared in a small town where everyone knew everyone else's business, and even more, her family con- tinually reminded her of her wayward years. Those years had involved drug and alco- hol abuse, petty crimes and sexual promiscuity. She felt as though she had explored her options, including return- ing to the streets and all that involved. She had even consid- ered suicide. I began to tell her about God's love and forgiveness. We shared some Bible vers- es, prayed together and then I began to tell her about Je- sus. I told her about the wom- an caught in the act of adultery and that Jesus confronted her sinfulness, but did not con- demn her. I told her about the Samaritan woman Jesus en- countered, according to John's Gospel, chapter 4. This wom- an also had a reputation in her community and that Jesus did not condemn her either. We talked a long time about God's love; a love that was un- conditional, a love that was so profound, it allowed Jesus to the penalty for all of the sins of all of the world. I told her that she was not alone in her sinful- ness and its guilt and that all of us, though our sins may be different from hers, were sin- ners too. I encouraged her, as difficult as it would be, to move on from her past and discover VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E.
