Poplar Street, Petersburg See 7TH & 8TH on page 4 By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Lady Chargers varsity basket- ball team played Evansville Reitz on Thursday, No- vember 4 at Pike Central, losing out to Reitz 57-45. The Lady Chargers hit the court strong in the first quarter, scoring 14 points to Reitz's 13. Sopho- more Brailey Mills, senior Kya Sullivan and senior Mallory Hunt all pulled in two field goals for a to- tal of four points a piece, while senior Kya Leighty took down the net, making a two-pointer for the La- dy Chargers. In the second quarter, the Lady Char- gers seemed to lose some of their fight, only scor- ing eight points to Reitz's 14. In the second half of the game, the Lady Char- gers battled through and tried to make a come back, picking up on their goals and free-throws. In the end though, they were unable to pull those extra points together to defeat Reitz, who seemed to quick- en their shooting and point count. Head Coach Kyle McCutchan said, "I think for the most part, we played hard, but on defense we just allowed too much dribble penetration that al- lowed for some easy baskets for Reitz or open shots on the perimeter. Reitz was athletic at the guard po- sition and for the most part, we handled their pres- sure and did some good things on offense, but Mal- lory Hunt battled foul trouble all night and that hurt us on both ends. She is a very valuable part of our team and it hurts when she is on the sideline, as she was our leading scorer last year, but Kya Leighty had a good game, scoring 17 points and her effort was tremendous." "We made a lot of first-game mistakes that we have to clean up and we will. I want to give credit to Reitz for making some big shots and never letting us get totally back into the game in the second half."
