Program will send eight students, two officers to Disney By Janice Barniak SG Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com The Princeton Police Dept., Princeton Community Mid- dle School and Toyota Mo- tor Manufacturing of Indiana have coordinated to provide a $15,000 Disney trip for eight Princeton middle school stu- dents, and two Princeton Po- lice officers — Officers Nefty Padilla and Jason Swan — this coming February. "I took this job, not just to protect, but to serve and that comes in many, many forms," said PPD Chief Der- ek McGraw, who contacted the Evansville Cops Connect- ing with Kids program to help get the local program off the ground. The program aims to start in middle school, developing relationships between police and children, and in Evans- ville began in Title I schools, where many students faced economic difficulties that would prevent them from go- ing otherwise. Most students have never flown on an air- plane or stayed in a hotel. "A trip for a family to Disney can cost thousands of dollars. So when you're putting food on the table and paying utili- ty bills...there are a lot of fam- ilies working hard who cannot afford it," said Evansville Po- lice Chief Billy Bolin. Ka'Liyah Naylor's Dis- ney trip coincided with her 14th birthday, and over the course of the trip, she and Of- ficer Taylor Merriss became friends, and still have brunch together occasionally. "You can't even sleep at night you're so excited. You try different foods, go on rides you never would go on your- self...it's one of those experi- ences you never forget," Nay- lor said. A fterwards, she wanted to share the experience with her whole family. "I tried to convince them," she said. Toyota Motor Manufactur- ing said they chose to fund the trip, not just this year, but next, because they want to connect with the community, according to TMMI President Leah Curry. "Connecting with youth is so important to us and that's where we step in because we're always trying to con- nect with youth and make sure they're aware of STEM fields and manufacturing, and have opportunity. Opportuni- ty is what everyone needs to go to the next level...it tugs at my heart a lot. We're all in." PCMS Principal Noah Velt- house said the trip will give staff a chance to amplify the message they're constant- ly trying to send to their stu- dents, and to reward good val- ues with the trip of a lifetime. "Our staff works daily to instill values in our students. Integrity, kindness, persever- ance, teamwork." area reunions A group of Toyota, Cops Connecting with Kids, Princeton Community Middle School and Evansville Police representatives gathered to kick off a new program that will send PCMS students to Disney with a police officer. Ka'Liyah Naylor, 14, became friends with Officer Taylor Merriss through a Dis- ney trip, and they continue the friendship with brunches and other get-togethers.
