It is the seventh sectional final the Titans have played in the 10 seasons Nick Hart has been the Gibson Southern coach. "We know each other really well. I think it is the eighth time in four years we have played each other. We have a lot of respect for them and what they do. We know it will be a tough game on Friday night," said Hart. While the two teams couldn't be much dif- ferent in their styles, they have had very sim- ilar results. Heritage Hills coach Todd Wilk- erson is also in his 10th season and has won twice as many games as he has lost, with a 76 -35 record, that includes guiding his team to the state championship game in 2019, where they lost 34-3 to Indianapolis Cha- tard, the same school that twice beat Gib- son Southern in the semi-state game. Heritage Hills is 9 -2, with their only loss- es being in the season opener to Mt. Vernon, when they had five turnovers, and to Gibson Southern 42-3 way back on Sept. 24. Heritage Hills runs the ball almost exclu- sively. In the first game this year against Gib- son Southern, they did not complete a pass. However, they had eight different players run the ball, and four players ran it five or more times. Their leading rusher carried the ball four times for 39 yards, as Gibson Southern's defense held them to 128 yards of defense. The Patriots' biggest offensive play of the game was a 38 -yard kick return. Heritage Hills' score was set up by a Gibson Southern fumble that was returned into the Titan redzone at the beginning of the sec- ond quarter. The field goal made it 21-3. But before the quarter was over, Gibson South- ern would score two more times to make it 35 -3 at halftime. Heritage Hills, in their wins, runs the ball, gains more than 200 yards on the ground, controls the tempo of the game and limits the time their opponents have the ball, and plays strong defense. They have allowed more than 18 points in three of their 11 games. They also had three shutouts. Gibson Southern, on the other hand, throws the ball. Typically passing for 250 yards or more. Titan quarterback Brady Al- len is currently seventh on the Indiana all- time career passing list, with 10,380 yards in his career. He does it extremely efficiently. He has completed 170 of 230 passes for 2,897 yards and 42 touchdowns so far this season. He has completed 74 percent of his passes and has only one interception. Senior receiver Rory Heltsley, Allen's top target, has caught 59 passes for 1,114 yards and 19 touchdowns. Eight receivers have caught touchdowns this season and seven of them have three or more. The run game has been there when they need it. On Friday, the Titans ran for 203 yards in 24 carries, as sophomore Sean De- Long ran for 113 yards on only seven carries. In the first game against Gibson Southern, Heritage Hills didn't get a chance to control the clock. The Titans took the opening kick- off, drove the length of the field and scored. The Titan defense shutdown Heritage Hills, forcing a three and out. The Titans scored quickly again to make it 14-0 before forcing another three and out. On the Patriots' sec- ond punt, Rory Heltsley swooped in from the left side, blocked the punt, got a good bounce, and was able to scoop it up and run into the endzone for a 21-0 lead with 3:50 still left in the quarter. "We had some big plays in the first game. A blocked punt and a big pass," said Hart. He knows that start is going to be hard to replicate. He also knows that young teams like the Patriots tend to get better as the season goes on. Since losing to Gibson Southern, the Patriots have won five straight, including: Washington 65 -0, Southridge 20 -13, Prince- ton 43-0, North Harrison 31-18, and Evans- ville Bosse 38 -28. Hart said big losses to an opponent ear- ly in the season have a way of turning into much closer games during the state tourna- ment. The history between Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern bears witness to Hart's statement. In 2019, when Heritage Hills was undefeat- ed until they lost in the state finals, they beat Gibson Southern 49 -14 in September. But in the sectional, it was a 21-20 win. Last year, Gibson Southern beat Heritage Hills 38 -0 in September, but only 21-10 in the sectional. He praised Heritage Hills' program through the years and said it is always a big accomplishment to beat Heritage Hills. "It will be a completely different game on Friday. We know that and we are ready for that," said Hart. Brayden Malone, Titan senior, is speared by Lions senior Mason Gilstrap, while Malone was covering the ball, earning Gilstrap a personal foul and an exit from the game, and giving the Lions two 15-yard penalties during the Titans' Sectional semi-final game against Salem on Friday, October 29 at Gibson Southern. Rory Heltsley, Titan senior, bobs back and forth, dodging Lions' player, as he makes his way to the endzone for the successful touch- down during the Titans' Sectional semi-final game against Salem on Friday, October 29 at Gibson Southern. Right: Devan Roberts, Titan junior, runs the ball down field through the Lions during the Ti- tans' Sectional semi-fi- nal game against Salem on Friday, October 29 at Gibson Southern. 49 -13 by end of the quarter. Gibson Southern started out with the ball in the fourth quarter on the Lions' 24-yard line. On the Titans' fourth down, sophomore Michael Herren received a 23-yard pass from sophomore Tanner Boyd for the touchdown, which was followed with a good PAT by No- votny, putting the score at 56 -13. The ball then went to the Lions, who fought for points under the running clock against the Titans' reserve defense. They ended up with a touchdown by Grant Mahu- ron, off of a 7-yard pass from Kaleb Tucker, which they followed up with a two-point con- version at 2:33 left in the game. By the time the Titans began with their possession, the game ended, leaving the Titans victorious over the Salem Lions by a score of 56 -21. The win pushes Gibson Southern's record to 10 -1. Gibson Southern's leaders of the game were: Brady Allen in passes with 15 of 21 for a total of 199 yards and three touchdowns; Sean DeLong in rushing, with seven carries, for a total of 133 yards and one touchdown; Rory Heltsley in receiving, with five recep- tions for a total of 63 yards and three touch- downs. Coach Nick Hart commented on the team and the win saying, "This time of year, just winning is the biggest thing, so you get to move on and play for another weekend. Ob- viously some things we can improve on, but right now it's a win and move on. So I thought our guys did a great job of that." "We've been without a sectional champi- onship for too long. So it's a big week for us and our program, to try and get another win and a sectional championship."
