B-10 School Tuesday, November 2, 2021 South Gibson Star-Times Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School MRS. CAMPBELL'S THIRD GRADE CLASS The third graders at Saint James have been tackling the study of fossils. We have been learning all about cast, mold, trace, and true form fossils. The kids have been learn- ing about how each of these fossils form. We are currently in the process of making our very own trace fossils. We have new visitors in the room and entire colony of ants. We have been observing how they live their day to day life. We have watched them make tunnels and bury their own dead. It has been a very exciting last few days. SISTER ARNOLD'S FOURTH GRADE CLASS Hello from the fourth grade class at St James School. Here we are again. Things have been pretty calm since we last spoke with you. No field trips to talk about. We did have to write a Saint Report for religion class. We each picked a saint and then look up their life. A fter that we had to read it and write down some of the important things about them. It wasn't too hard but some of the information was hard to understand. Sis- ter had to tell us what some of the words meant. We are go- ing to dress as our saint on All Saints Day and wear the cos- tume to Mass. That is going to be fun. Sister helped some of us get our costumes today. She has lots of stuff from the plays she had with her class- es. A fter Mass we are going to have a Walk-a-thon with differ- ent activities. We get to wear Spirit Dress too. It is going to be a fun day. Oh, on Tuesday, All Souls Day, Father is going to say two Masses one right after the other and Sister is going to go and if we are here by 7:30 we will get to go with her. That is going to be fun because we have never gone to two Mass- es like that. Sister says we should pray for all the people who have died. Now a little information about math class. We are learning how to multiply two digit numbers. We are doing it with Distributive Proper- ties. Which means we have to break the numbers apart like 26 is 20 + 6. It sounds hard but it isn't very hard now that we understand it. Sister says we will learn another way to mul- tiply next week. Sometimes we wonder why we have to learn so many ways to do the same thing but it does make us think so we guess that is why. We are talking about eco- systems in science and we got with a partner and we had to draw the ecosystem. It was a lot of fun. We got out our Chromebooks and had to look up all that was in the ecosys- tem and then we drew all that we could. They really turned out nice and Sister thought so too. That's about all we have to say this month. We will tell you some more next month. Take care and God bless you all. —Saint James School fourth graders MR. WARGEL'S FIFTH GRADE CLASS As the season of fall sets in and a chill fills the air, the fifth grade at Saint James School began their second grading period of this school year. With a quarter of the school year already over, we have found our rhythm and look forward to facing the new topics and challenges that we will face over the next coming weeks. In math we are finishing up our unit over multiplication. For the past week, we have been learning how to multiply decimals. Once this is com- plete, we will tackle the chal- lenge of division. We will re- view how to do long division, and we will learn how to di- vide decimals. Although this can be somewhat challenging at times, we know we will be able to reach our goal. In social studies, we have been learning about the ear- ly exploration from the Euro- pean countries. We have al- ready discussed how Spain settled in the new world. We read about Saint Augustine, which is the first permanent European settlement that still exists today. Over the next few weeks, we will be reading about the English settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth. This will be a great prepara- tion for us for the celebration of Thanksgiving. On Monday, November 1st, the students at Saint James School celebrated All Saints Day. As part of our religion curriculum, each student in the 5th grade created a saint project using Google Slides. Students had to research their saint and find basic informa- tion to put in their slides. They also had to create a video biog- raphy about their saint to em- bed in their project. Students were then able to dress as their saint for our Mass held on Monday. Last week, the students at St. James School participat- ed in Red Ribbon Week. Each day had a different theme and dress to encourage students to lead a drug-free life. Stu- dents got very creative with their dress on each day. It was a fun-filled week for all. St. James Catholic School The fifth grade class at St. James School celebrated Red Ribbon Week by being drug-free from "Head to Toe." Students wore crazy hats and socks to school. St. James School fifth grade students Rolen We- ber, Millie Wilmes, Chloe Karcher, and Jonah Kempf worked together to crack the code during a recent Es- cape Room activity focusing on homographs and mul- tiple meaning words. Here we have Makenzie Morehead and Will Nixon busy working on their ecosystem.
