Poplar Street, Petersburg By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Lady Chargers' cross country team competed at semi-state on Saturday, October 23 at Brown County. The team placed 16th, with a top five average time of 21:08 and 376 points, missing out on moving on to state by 1:16 and 175 points, mak- ing this the end of the season for the girls' team as a whole. According to the ISSHA rules, the individuals who place in the top ten outside of the qualifying top six schools move on to the state race. Under this rule, Xavery Weisman became the first girls' cross coun- Chanley finishes up XC season at Semi-State By Matthew Haycraft On Saturday, October 23, Char- ger junior Peyton Chanley com- peted in the semi-state race, rep- resenting the Pike Central boys' cross country team. Chanley ended up placing 109th with a time of 17:21, missing out on moving to the state finals by 1:27, ending the boys' cross coun- try season. Head Coach Randy Graham said, "He was only six seconds off his personal record and gained some valuable experience today and put together a great post sea- son. We are proud of what he did today and what our young boys' team did as a whole this year." WEISMAN HEADED TO STATE Xavery Weisman took 12th place overall in the semi-state cross country girls' division race, mak- ing her the first Lady Charger in school history to make it to the State Finals on Saturday, October 30. The most recent time the Char- gers played Brown County was Oc- tober 2019, when they lost 53-21. Coming into this game, the Brown County Eagles were 5 -5 overall and 2-3 in the conference, where as the Chargers were 1-7 overall and 0 -5 in the conference, so this game was bound to be a battle for the home team. In the first quarter, the Chargers started off with a blast of fighting power and sophomore Julian Gish scored the first touchdown of the game with 10 :55 on the score- board. Although the PAT was lost by a failed run in, the Chargers still held to that first score of the game and kept going. The Ironman is a 70.3-mile tri- athlon that starts out with a swim, moves to biking and finishes up with a run. The 1.2-mile swim took place in the Prairie Creek Reser- voir in Muncie.
