Sweet's Column By Barb Sweet My So Called Millennial Life By Stephanie Hayes Welcome to Southwest, enjoy your canceled flight Hi, and welcome to your Southwest Airlines flight 2021 to nowhere. Please gather at the gate ac- cording to your group. Stan- dard procedure is to hov- er around your assigned let- ter, nervously clutching your boarding pass. Now, just wedge your body between two people who don't seem that assertive. Even better if there's a child you can bigfoot. Good. Get as close to the front of your group lane as possi- ble, even if your number is B- 5,469,232. When someone says, "I'm B-6, what are you? " pretend not to notice them. Stare at your phone and put in ear- buds. When they insist, say something like, "Who knows how any of this works?! " Do not leave any gap in the line. Consider setting down your carry-on and having a con- versation with the satchel as though it is a human passen- ger. Tell the bag, "First thing I'm doing in Orlando is buying a MagicBand at a gas station." People will naturally leave you alone. Now that you have formed an orderly queue, it's our un- fortunate duty to tell you that this flight is canceled. We are very sorry that we cannot help you find a way on your journey or offer you anything of value at this time. There's a lot of specula- tion going around as to why we canceled more than 1,000 flights on Sunday, so let's "clear the air." Get it? We al- ready "cleared the air" this weekend! Oh, you don't think that's ... OK. Florida had bad weather, because, ugh, Florida! If you know, you know. Florida started this. We're al- so contending with COVID-19 staffing short- ages, same as your neighbor- hood Buffalo Wild Wings. We do not be- lieve we should be treated any differently than Buffalo Wild Wings. In fact, some of our flight attendants, stretched to their physical and mental breaking points, have told us of their intention to work at Buffalo Wild Wings. We know you are firing up social media, and we encour- age free speech. But we at Southwest like to focus on the positives. We have many fea- tures to offer other than ac- tually getting to your destina- tion, and we humbly ask you to think about how great this flight could have been. We would have loved for you to have witnessed our Evolve cabin remodel, with more comfortable seat cush- ions and enhanced lumbar support. Regrettably, we will not be offering sitting as a service on any of our planes. This approach will keep the new cushions nice and fluffy. No butts about it! Haha! Oh, you're not in the mood for ... moving on. It's still a pandemic, and we know cleanliness is import- ant. The planes you will not be flying on today have been deep cleaned with electrostat- ic disinfectant and antimicro- bial spray. We also use efficient HE- PA filters to purify the air you will not be breathing. The best way to keep you safe is to not even get on board in the first place. We offer com- plimentary snacks and drinks on any of our flights over 250 miles, but since your flight will be ze- ro miles, there will be no ser- vice. If you ask the gate atten- dant nicely, he may give you a fistful of belVita Breakfast Biscuits that you can snack on. Finally, we ask you to think about what you missed. You missed a seatmate gossiping about her sister-in-law's Bo- tox mishap. You missed sev- en tense exchanges with a man whose mask "just keeps slipping off his nose." You missed four crying babies and a screening of "A Star Is Born," which you have prob- ably already seen. Ask your- self, did you really want to fly today anyway? Oh, you did? Oh. We regret that we cannot help you with that. Stephanie Hayes is a colum- nist at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. Benny will be missed in the Pike County area. To family and friends, share your fond memories and more will be added to those. EVENTS October 31-Halloween. There were no post- cards this week at Sweets Col- umn, Winslow, IN 47598. We did re- ceive a card for my mom's birth- day and there was a note in it. The note says, "I like to read the column all the time. Good job. Brigitte Chamness." Brigitte, thank you for those kind words. The card will be given to Mom in a few days. She will be glad to hear from you. Winslow Patoka River is still low and the White Riv- er has gone down and is still dropping. We could have had rain, but the severe storms stayed south, where Spencer County had an F-1 tornado on October 15. We have had lots of wind to drop those loose limbs out of the trees. Our temps have been in the low 70s, with nighttime temps in the 50s, which is sweater and jacket weather. Every day, the leaves are changing colors, as you see red and gold, red and yellow, all red, yellow and green on the walnut trees, white bark on the trees that have lost their leaves early and burning bushes are changing to red from their green color. Several flowers of the season are beau- tiful to see dotted in the yards and some yards have Hallow- een set up, and each yard is worth slowing down for. When a vehicle goes down, you have to stay home until it's back up and running again. That is what Ava did. She was down for several days as parts were put back on, then she went on a test drive, when we heard another sound that wasn't there before. That part was diagnosed by a local auto shop and now we are back to taking our scenic drives. We also had some help from Ver- non, who came to our rescue. In the neighborhood, we have seen a building go up, with the family helping make it happen, and soon, they will be able to use this one-room building hidden in a patch of woods. There are more fields be- ing harvested and the view you can see is amazing, as you can see a far distance to an- other tree line or a farm house with more silos. Our lawns haven't grown too much, but the leaves are falling to be raked in a pile to jump into or be mulched. Mom's Christmas or Eas- ter cactus, with other house plants, are outside, but it has buds on it now and I guess it's from the cold spell we had. It's almost time to bring them in- side, but they are doing so well in the fresh air. Not too much going on in Winslow, but the upcom- ing Halloween trick-or-treat from 5 -8 p.m. and Sweets col- umn Halloween yard Deco- ration in the town limits of Winslow. Our Brownstown area has more yards decorat- ed and also parts of Main St., some in East end. The lights are about to dim for this week, but keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your area. Stay safe and social distance. Wear your mask in crowds. As al- ways, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. Happy Halloween and Happy 95th Birthday, Mom. Want to share your news with others? The Press- Dispatch can help deliver it to Pike and the surrounding counties.
