Poplar Street, Petersburg "I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubt- ing" (I Timothy 2:8). I'm often asked if Paul meant we should lit- erally lift our hands when we pray. Since this is how David prayed (Ps. 141:2), we know there's nothing wrong with doing so, as long as you understand what Paul meant when he stipu- lated that the hands you lift in prayer must be "holy." I say that because some think that Paul is referencing the Law, where God vowed He wouldn't hear His people if the hands they lift- ed in prayer weren't holy: "…when ye spread forth your hands, I will The 78 million Americans called seniors are our most vulnerable and neglected group in America. Unless one dies young, all will some- day walk this path on life's journey. All the talk of golden years and marketing of products will not change the reality of getting old. Though many of them are filled with wisdom and have been among the elite of our society, things change when the complications of aging arrive. We are all like a Trinity. We have body, mind and soul. As life's journey faces the sunset, there are new fears, hurts and loneliness. So much could be better for this group with more love, respect and compassion. The soul or spirit is the real person and the eternal part. Even the soul may feel neglected as many churches target the young and forget the older generation. I heard one pastor explain how they planned to reach the next generation and were going to make changes the elderly might not feel comfortable with. The wonder- ful people who had built the church and once been its spiritual leaders were told there is prob- ably a church down the street where they might feel more at home. As the physical weak- ness and sickness comes, many feel ne- glected by their doc- tor. When the physician has little time, patience, compassion or respect, they feel hurt and un- wanted. I have gone to waiting rooms of great hospitals and interviewed the elderly and ma- ny feel little interest or compassion from their physicians. As the mind becomes slower and the recall is not as fast, they often feel put down by fam - ily and caregivers. I would suggest to pastors, physicians and family that they too will walk in this lonely valley one day. Minutes with the Bible By Pastor Ricky Kurth Hi, to you all and blessings to each of you. Hope you are all well as can be and of a good state of mind. My mind is always thinking overtime and it usually gets me into trouble. Some would say good thing his mind is going because his body has slowed down. It was a fairly normal week for us as the grandson and I worked on that blasted pile of limbs again as much as we could. We have thankfully got it down to perhaps a day of burn- ing and we may be done with that pile howev- er we have two more to deal with. It rained us out a couple of days and we didn't even try to burn, but I attempted another proj- ect which was trying to get the garden hos- es from leaking at the male and female joints by replacing the rubber gaskets. Well it didn't work, so I guess until we buy a couple of new hoses we'll just make do with a little extra wa- ter on the ground. This is Memorial Day time and we decorated the family gravesites with some pretty flowers. I don't have to have a special day to remember how good my family has been to me especially whenever I certainly didn't deserve anyone's love. I was a total mess when I was younger and if you say you aren't much better now, I would have to say you didn't know me then. I was spoiled rotten. My family didn't have the finances to spoil me, but I was spoiled. I was in competition with the best fit throwers in the world and it tears me up sometimes when I remember how bad I was to my parents. As I grew from a bratty kid to a more responsible person I tried to make it up to them. It worked as far as our relationship was concerned, but it has never been taken from my memory.
