The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, June 2, 2021 A-11 Methodist Pentecostal Nazarene Presbyterian Wesleyan MINUTES Continued from page 9 hide Mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood" (Isa. 1:15 cf. Ps. 66:18). But this cannot be what Paul had in mind here, for "we are not under the law, but under grace" (Rom. 6:15). Sin does not hinder your prayers in the dispensation of grace, but all who love the Lord will be careful not to presume up- on God's grace by continuing in sin that grace may abound (Rom. 6:1,2). But this means there must be some other reason the apostle speaks of lifting up holy hands, and there is. You see, in the context, Paul has just finished instructing us to pray "for kings, and for all that are in authority" (I Tim. 2:1,2). So Paul is actually say- ing that the hands you lift in prayer to pray for our leaders in government must not be in- volved in any unholy subver- sive activities against the lead- ers in government for whom you are praying, leaders to whom God says we should be subject (Titus 3:1) without re- sisting (Rom. 13:1-7). This is also why Paul says men should pray "without wrath and doubting" (I Tim. 2:8). Some would connect his words here to the kingdom program, where the Lord told the Jews to whom He minis- tered, (See Matthew 15:24 and Romans 15:8) "when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any" (Mark 11:25). There was cer- tainly no room for wrath in an instruction like that! They were also told, "Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart… he shall have whatsoever he saith… what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them" (Mark 11:23,24). But every believer who has ever prayed without doubt- ing, only to not receive what- soever he prayed for, knows that we are not under God's kingdom program for Israel any more than we are under the Law that He gave them. So these references to wrath and doubting under the king- dom program cannot be what Paul had in mind when he said to pray "without wrath and doubting." Rather, in the context, Paul is directing us to pray for our leaders in government with- out the wrath toward them that was probably so com- mon among God's people in Paul's day that the apostle had to address it. Even today, be- lievers are continuously angry with our leaders, and always doubting their ability to lead us. So Paul's instruction that we should pray for them "with- out wrath and doubting" is as needful today as it was the day those words left his pen. So in- stead of railing on our leaders, beloved, let's pray for them. PAWS WEEK PAWS WEEK Pet of the DUKE It's amazing how much love and laughter a dog can bring into our lives. This week, PAWS is fea- turing a handsome young fellow named Duke, who has been passed over by potential adopters and we are not sure why. He has a wonderful disposition, loves kids and wants to please. He is very spunky, and is approximately one and a half years old, with soft, chocolate brown fur, husky markings and warm green eyes. He loves to play and would make an exceptional family dog. To adopt this special young fellow, call 812-354- 9894. kind and considerate to your loved ones so you won't have a ghost living in your closet. If you save aluminum cans to smash and recycle you will need a large space to keep them because at 40 cents per pound you need many pounds to offset the gas it takes to get them to the scrap yard. I thought I had more than 40 pounds of aluminum, but it turned out to only 40 so I got less than I had hoped for. Oh well, at least they aren't end- ing up in a landfill to pollute our Earth. The Earth's well being does depend on all of us being more careful with how we treat our resources. Timeless Classics had their car show this past Saturday and I know I seen the number 157 which meant we had that many show cars at our show. It was cold with a breeze blow- ing continuously and I was cold until 3 or 3:30 that af- ternoon. We had two hooded sweatshirts for sale and they sold in about 15 minutes after the announcement of having shirts and hats for sale at the prize table. I enjoy the prize table because you get to talk to so many people and that is good for me because everyone knows how shy I am. My wife's niece and her family came down from Min- neapolis to be at the gradua- tion of another niece last Sat- urday evening. Sunday after- noon we went to a weiner roast to be with her family. We all had a good time and enjoyed one another's company. I pray for a safe trip home for them. Sunday morning we wor- shipped with the folks at Beth- any General Baptist church in Bicknell. America the Beauti- ful was sang and when it was time for me to bring the mes- sage I did my best to deliver the words God would have wanted said. The girls who usually go with us sang He set Me Free and I played my gui- tar and sang Jimmy Fortune's song More Than A Name On a Wall. I'm not the world's best singer but it felt good so it did one person some good. Well enough for now re- member to love one another and set out to be a blessing next week. Michael (Mike) Punke, Pas- tor PETERSBURG FREE METHODIST CHURCH 202 Walnut Street As the number of COVID cas- es decreases, people are start- ing to return to many of the ac- tivities they have been missing. We are returning to many of our regular activities. We cur- rently meet in person for wor- ship service at 10 :30 a.m. on Sunday. The messages are al- so live on Facebook, or you can watch the message later. With the weather getting warmer, we will start transmitting via an FM station, if you prefer to stay in your car and listen in the church parking lot. We will let people know when we start broadcasting and what channel to tune into. Sunday school for all ages re- opens at 9:30 a.m. Location of the classes has changed. We will help you get to the proper classroom. We have also started a new Sunday School class called "The Journey." Jodi Correll is teach- ing. This is not an age-based class. It is a discipleship class designed to help people know Scripture better, and become more like Jesus. It is a great class for young adults, new be- lievers and people who just want to be refreshed and grow, even if they have been following Je- sus for years. Youth Group meets at 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is our goal for our youth group to be service ori- ented. The teens will do a work project at someone's house or other ministry, and have a brief devotional. It is important that we have your contact information and a way to contact each teen, because we may meet at the church, or at the place we will be serving. Families are welcome take part in the service project, but the parents are responsible for their children. The nursery will remain closed for now. We don't believe it is a good idea to allow children of different families to play together at this time. If your child needs to be tak- en out of the service, the nurs- ery can always be used as a place to change your child, or as a cry room. It is important that everyone wears their masks until they reach their seat. We also ask that people stay with the group they came with and not shake hands. We use every other pew, and ask that you stay socially dis- tanced from those in your pew who you did not come with. We make every effort to ster- ilize our facility between ser- vices. There is a basket as you en- ter the sanctuary for tithes and offerings. You may also give online through petersburgfmc. org. There is a link to our website on our Facebook page also, and we often put announcements and information on both pages. Peace and joy in the Lord. Jesus dwelling inside His followers means that His love never leaves those who've wel- comed Him into their lives. His love that surpasses knowl- edge (3:19) roots us to Him, helping us to understand how deeply He love us. Words written for children can say it best: "Yes, Jesus loves me." How does Jesus dwelling in- side you give you great com- fort? How can you grow closer to God knowing that His power gives you strength? So many trials come into our lives and along with the busi- ness of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. Sunday morning service 10 :15 a.m. and Sunday school at 11 a.m. We are on Facebook live Sunday mornings. We just reflected on those that gave their lives for the freedom we live in. We should remember them in prayer ev- ery day of lives in our daily prayers. We should also re- flect on the one that died for our freedom from the sins that had us bound. In our prayer life, we should lift him up with words of thanksgiving for the price He paid for our freedom we can enjoy every day. Remember those that are in the hospital, nursing homes and those that are home for re- covery. Lift up in prayer your president, U.S. Congress, your state and local government of- ficials, as the Bible states that we might live a peaceful life. May your week be blessed and your journey's safe. I hear a lot of people com- plain that Christians don't do anything to help people. "Yes, we do." But, you see, we live by a different code. God's Word tells us we are not to do our alms (deeds) before men so we can be praised. We are not to sound the trumpet (blow our own horn). Because if we do, we will lose our reward in heaven. It tells us the praise we get here will be all the re- ward we get. So, while you're telling us not to judge (which is a whole different text), how about you not judging us? God sees what we do and don't do. He will judge both you and us. Let's leave it in His capa- ble hands. Ron Vickers, Pastor Elaine Young, Reporter, 812-749 -1122 (leave a mes- sage). Expanding horizons, one foot at a time My 8 -year-old often likes to wear the pants of one out- fit with the shirt of another. "I want these socks today! " he proclaims, holding up a white and a black. When I offer the stray black one I spot on the couch, he insists, "No! I like things different! " What about us in the world ... in the church? Studies show that people tend to live near others like them. Many con- gregations consist predom- inantly of one ethnicity. We gravitate toward people who share our marital status, pro- fession, values and views. Sometimes this is sensible, but often it limits our growth and horizons. For a tux-clad ring bearer, matching socks are best. But when socks' only purpose is keeping feet warm at school, where my youngster feels "at home" and each child's uniqueness is celebrated, I embrace his nonconformity and that of his socks. Would that we all appreciated diver- sity as much! Office hours: 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday. Amy Melhiser, Secretary OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N.
