Starting this Memori- al Day weekend, area swimmers, paddlers, anglers and others who enjoy spending time playing in our lo- cal rivers and streams can access up-to-date water quality results for more than 65 pop- ular recreation areas throughout western North Carolina, north- eastern Tennessee, and Towns and Union counties in north Georgia. This service is due to the hard work of MountainTrue vol- unteers and staff who collect water samples every Wednesday and rush to process, analyze and post the results on the swimguide.org web- site and smartphone app in time for your weekend fun. "E. coli is a reliable indicator of the pres- ence of other bacteria and pathogens that are harmful to hu- man health," explains MountainTrue's Broad Riverkeeper. "Moun- tainTrue and our com- munity of dedicated donors and volunteers are proud to be able to offer this public ser- vice." The swimguide.org website or smartphone app, geo-locates the user and provides a list of nearby testing sites that either pass or fail the EPA guide- line for E. coli in desig- nated swimming areas of 235 CFU (or colony forming units) per 100 milliliters. In the Broad River Watershed our swim guide sites include a swimming hole on Buf- falo Creek, the Moss Lake Public Recre- ation Area, two pad- dling access points on the First Broad River, two sites on the Broad River, the Lake Lure Swimming Beach, and two sites on the Rocky Broad above Lake Lure. Samples are collect- ed on Wednesdays, processed using the IDEXX Colilert sys- tem, incubated over- night, and results are analyzed and posted in time for the weekend. Results are available on the Swim Guide website ( t h e sw i m g u i d e. o r g ) or on the smartphone app, available for An- droid and Apple iP- hones. E. coli bacteria makes its way into our rivers and streams from sewer/septic system leaks, cattle accessing streams, and stormwater run- off – especially runoff from animal agricul- tural operations with substandard riparian buffers. E. coli is an indicator for the pres- ence of other more harmful microbes, such as Cryptosporid- ium, Giardia, Shigella, and norovirus. Heavy rains and storms of- ten result in spikes in E. coli contamination, increasing the risk to human health. Contact with or consumption of contaminated water can cause gastroin- testinal illness, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic, and wound infections. The most commonly reported symptoms are stom- ach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and low-grade fever. In general, water- ways that are located in more remote ar- eas or near protected public lands that lack a lot of agriculture, development or indus- trial pollution sources are the cleanest and will be less affected by stormwater runoff. Areas closer to devel- opment and polluting agricultural practices are much more heavily impacted. MountainTrue uses the data collected through its Swim Guide, VWIN (Volun- teer Water Information Network), Georgia Adopt-A-Stream and microplastics sam- pling programs to inform its advocacy and to push for sci- ence-based policy solutions. Through its I Love Rivers advoca- cy campaign, Moun- tainTrue succeeded in getting the City of Asheville to participate in a Storm Water Task- force. In the General Assembly, Mountain- True is advocating for targeted clean water investments to be in- cluded in this year's state budget including $3 million for septic system and wastewa- ter upgrades through the Community Con- servation Assistance Program, and $26 million to help farm- ers keep cattle and stormwater runoff out of our rivers through the Agricultural Cost Share Program and the Agricultural Water Resource Assistance Program. In Congress, MountainTrue is call- ing on our delegation to support the $111 billion in the American Jobs Plan that is al- located for water and wastewater infrastruc- ture. MountainTrue encourages the pub- lic to take action and send a letter to their local representatives through its iloverivers. org website.
