DANNY BLYTHE DeJARNET T Danny Blythe DeJarnett, 74, of Arthur, passed away peace- fully at home on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, after a courageous and lengthy battle against multiple health issues. He was born February 26, 1947, in Oakland City, to the late Blythe and Mayme (Roy- alty) DeJarnett. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1965, and Nashville Auto Diesel College in 1966. He studied business/ accounting at Oakland City College (University) until be- ing drafted into the US Army in 1968, where he served un- til March 1970. He retired from Kindill Min- ing, Old Ben Mine #1 after 30 years, and was a 50 -year mem- ber of the United Mine Work- ers of America, Local Union 5179. He also worked at Jasper Engines, and in later years, part-time for Jackson Auto- motive, where he could con- tinue to see his many friends and former co-workers stop- ping in to swap a story or a joke with him. He served many years as a member of the Patoka Town- ship Trustees Advisory Board, and was a board member of the Museum of the Coal In- dustry at Lynnville. He took great joy in vol- unteering for his children's school organizations and was always the first to try to come up with materials and skills to work for the P TO, and was past president of the Pike Cen- tral Band Boosters. He was skilled at many things, could fix anything, and was an avid woodworker, spending countless hours in his wood shop. Danny always had a smile and a story. His greatest love was for his family and the home he built together with Sheila in Arthur. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sheila; his son, Jason (Kelley) and their chil- dren, Brooke, Jack and Claire, of Fredericksburg, Va.; his daughter, Andrea Robling, and her son, Kyle, of Winslow; and a sister, Peggy (Frank) Ded- rick, of Jasper. Public graveside services, with Veteran's salute, were at 11 a.m. EDT on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at Augusta Cemetery in Augusta, with Rev. Terry Beadles officiating. Military graveside rites were conduct- ed by the Oakland City Amer- ican Legion Post #256 Memo- rial Detail. There was no public visita- tion at the funeral home. Nass & Son Funeral Home of Huntingburg has been en- trusted with his care. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Reggie Deffendall; and a sister, Sue Selby. Memorial services were at noon on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at the chapel of Gate- way Funeral Home, with Pas- tor Rich Cook and Pastor Alex Rudolph officiating. A grave- side service followed at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 10, 2021, at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Pe- tersburg, with Pastor Alex Ru- dolph officiating. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the donors' favorite charity or the Grace Nazarene Benevolent Fund. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Delbert Ray Parker and Rob- ert Clay Parker; sister, Wilma Gay Lane; and one grandson. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Ed Lee Mortuary North Chapel, with Yvonne Evans officiating. Military graveside rites followed at Sugarland Memory Gardens. MAY BELLE SCHMALTZ May Belle (Hobson) Schmaltz, 92, passed away April 30, 2021, at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville. She was born June 19, 1928, in the Cato Community in Pike County, to Ray and Lela (Barnett) Hobson. She lived her young life and school days there until she married Gene Schmaltz on April 2, 1945, and moved to Oakland City, where she lived the rest of her life. She was a member of the Oakland City First General Baptist Church. She loved being with her family, and sewing dolls and stuffed animals. She at- tended ceramics classes for 20 years. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Carolyn Schmaltz, of Mitchel; daughter and son- in-law, Sondra and Steven McCrary, of Oakland City; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Le- la Hobson; her husband of 53 years, Gene Schmaltz, who passed in 1998; and one brother, John Hobson, of De- catur, Ill. A funeral service was at 1:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City, with Pastor Alec Hens- ley officiating. Burial followed at Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City. A visitation was from 11 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. The Family of Guy Cockerham PAMELA AYN NELSON Pamela Ayn Nelson, 72, of Jasper, formerly of Peters- burg, passed away on Thurs- day, May 6, 2021, in the Jas- per Memorial Hospital. She was born in Evansville on September 23, 1948, to the late Joe and Allene ( Vote) Ack- erman. She graduated from Boon- ville High School in 1966 and attended Indiana State Uni- versity, where she was a mem- ber of Zeta Tau Alpha. On De- cember 23,1972, she mar- ried James L. Nelson in the Main Street United Method- ist Church in Boonville. They had one son Jeffrey. In 1976, the family moved to Peters- burg from Terre Haute, where Jim was reassigned as a Troop- er by the Indiana State Police. Pam retired from the Public Service Indiana (Duke Ener- gy) Vincennes Office, where she worked in the Engineer- ing Department. During re- tirement, she worked as a dep- uty in the Pike County Trea- surer's Office. In 2018, she and Jim relocated to Jasper. She was an active member of the Petersburg First Unit- ed Methodist Church. She was serving as treasurer for the board of directors of Pike County Christian Assistance, which sponsors the food pan- try at Somebody's Place. She was an avid golfer and a mem- ber of the Prides Creek Golf Course Ladies Association. Survivors include her hus- band, Jim, of Jasper; son, Jef- frey; his wife, Mendy (Hen- son); grandsons, Nolan and Sam, of Petersburg; and sis- ter, Linda Goad, of Ormond Beach, Fla. A funeral service will be at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2021, in the Petersburg First United Methodist Church. A burial service will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Boonville. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time on Sat- urday at the fellowship hall of the church. Casual attire is suggested. PARKER Oscar G. Parker "Big O," 80, of Petersburg, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Golden Living Center. He was born December 31, 1940, in Sharples, W.V., to Dettie Frances (Lambert) and James Mason Parker. He attended Logan High School and received his G.E.D. in the Army. He retired from IPL Generating Station on July 1, 2001. He was a para- trooper in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Peters- burg America Legion, where he served as past commander, and also a member of Indiana National Guard, Moose Lodge and the BassMasters Associa- ROGER PAUL DEFFENDALL Roger Paul Deffendall, 76, of Clarksville, Tenn., passed away on Monday May 3, 2021, at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville. He was born November 4, 1944, in Plymouth, England, the son of the late Linden Paul Deffendall and Edith Joan Bunt Deffendall. He was a member of the Class of 1963 at Winslow High School. He worked for many years as an electrical lineman for municipalities in Indiana, Tennessee and Alaska. He at- tended Grace Church of the Nazarene, where he served as an usher. His hobbies included old trucks and collecting pock- et knives. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Valeria Kay Lane Deffendall, of Clarksville; his sons, Kevin Dean (Sara) Def- fendall, of Clarksville, Tenn., Roger Wayne (Billie Jo) Def- fendall, of Washington State, and Anthony (Gina) Ruff of Lee, Fla.; brothers, Ed Def- fendall, of Petersburg, and Lee Deffendall, of Petersburg; a sister, Debbie Underhill, of Spencer; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sev- eral nieces and nephews. ARLENE WILLIS Arlene Willis, 77, of Oakland City, entered rest on Wednes- day, May 5, 2021, at Memori- al Hospital and Healthcare in Jasper. She was born on Jan. 21, 1944, in Evansville, to Alfred and Ruth ( Watson) Traylor. She was a member of Amer- ican Legion Post #256 Ladies Auxiliary, V.F.W.
