Poplar Street, Petersburg Recently, Fox News told of a 13-year-old girl who got in trouble at school for wearing a shirt that said, "Virginity Rocks! " The back of her shirt was equally delightful and showed that she was one very forward-thinking young lady. It read, "I'm loving my husband, and I haven't even met him yet! " This sweet girl's wonderful testimony remind- ed me of how the Lord Jesus showed that He was one very forward-thinking Man when He prayed to God about His eleven disciples: "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them al- so which shall believe on Me through their word" ( John 17:20). Most Bible commentaries maintain that the There is only one way to heaven and that is through Jesus Christ. It is not through a reli- gion or a particular denomination but through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He said, "I am the way, the truth and the life and no man cometh to the Father but by me." ( John 14:6) It is not politically correct to believe in one God who has the only true way of salvation. It is all right, they say, to believe in many ways and religious practices that are equally import- ant, and all eventually lead to the same place. There is nothing really new about this age-old attitude. There are cults that have nothing to offer lost people except empty promises and a life filled with confusing false teachings. The Bible, God's inspired Word, tells us how to find the truth that sets men free. It is to search the Scriptures and listen not to man but to God and the plain teaching of His Word. It is truth that sets men free and gives hope of eternal life. We must never be satisfied with bits and pieces of truth. Many churches today share only bits and piec- es of truth and promote a market driven religion. It is really a Wal-Mart ap- proach with something to satisfy everyone. It is not for the church to sat- isfy our interest and be our source of entertain- ment. It is for us to wor- ship and satisfy God. He, and He alone, is to be worshiped in spirit and in truth. Only the Word made flesh has made salvation possible. It is so easy for pastors to slowly drift from truth and lead many good people into a fog of doubt, deception, and confusion. It is so easy to drift away from the truth and so difficult to find your way back. There is nothing more important, as we journey a few years on earth, than to have a relationship with Christ. Seems like we went from one thing to another but it all worked out. You know things always work themselves out only sometimes the result isn' al- ways the way we would like to see. Hauled trash one day this week and if I'm not mistaken I had 12 bags which caused me to make two trips. It wasn't all ours but we help with our kid's trash sometimes. Our t-ball grandson had another game last Monday evening and it is amazing the differ- ence between their first practice and their first game. This was their second game and there was an even bigger improvement in their play. Our grandson really got a hold of one and knocked it for a trip. The amazing part was he ran hard and it was straight to first base instead of third base. It sure made me a happy and proud grandpa On Tuesday morning I woke up early and got up to check if it was raining or if it had. Once I had a visual of the weather I checked the weath- er app which showed lots more rain I went back to bed and slept soundly for about another three hours. The extra sleep felt good but staying in bed has always seemed to be a waste of time. If I could have when I was younger I would stay in bed during the day and play all night. I was hard for my Mother to .raise because I was head strong and silly. Not much better today but I do make an attempt to think more before I act but the rashness still shows up from time to time. A fter we all got up we discovered that our grandson had become sick to his stomach and had a fever. We called his doctor and they were able to see him which resulted in a diagnosis of bug which is going around. I felt miserable for him, because he just looked like he felt bad. Jim Gidcumb, Pastor Church Note Deadline 10 a.m. Tuesday Heavenly Father and holy Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we're in your outer court and have come boldly before your royal highness to ask your will while seeking your face and knocking on your heart's door for mercy for our homes, our homeland and believers all around the world to be healed in mind, body, soul and spirit. Hear our cry. Heal our wounds and forgive us our sins and trespasses as we forgive our debtor, our enemies and persecutors. Help us to be like you in love and power to the glory of God, the Father. Lord Jesus, help guide and bless our govern- ment (in this one nation under God), the lead- ers, its citizens and our friends and neighbors. It's all for your love in us, for your life through us and for the liberty we have in Christ. Your will be done in earth as it is in heaven; for yours is the kingdom, the power and glory for- ever and ever. Amen and Amen. Written for National Day of Prayer by Elyne J. Strauss on May 6. Your pres- ence will be appreciated and I'm sure you will feel the bless- ing of God. "As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God" (Romans 8:14). The first key for usefulness in God's Kingdom is humili- ty. Pride cuts us off from God (and from other people), and deceives us into thinking we can do God's work without God's power. When we rely on the Holy Spirit, however, He sanctifies us and empow- ers us so we can be effective tools in God's hands. But there is a second key, and that is faith, faith that God is sovereign, and that He is at work, even if we can't see it. Habakkuk complained to God that evil people were winning the day. But God re- plied, "I will work in your days which you would not believe, though it were told you" (Ha- bakkuk 1:5). God is at work, even in the midst of the problems, pessi- mism and frustrations of our day. He alone is sovereign and that is why we can trust Him, even when the way seems dark.
