There's one of my fi rst bucks taken in Alabama, a Virginia eight-pointer, and a nice eleven from Missouri. Each mount made its way to my wall for different reasons along with the fact they made an attractive display. And then there's the broken fi ve-pointer. He's small, unidimensional, and particularly unimpressive. Well overlooked by anyone who might be cruising my dis- play. But he made his way to the wall not for what he is, but for whose he is. It was my son's fi rst buck. He was nine years old when he landed this massive monarch and forev- er stamped extreme value on this otherwise defi cient deer. The value was not in the work of art, but in who signed it. The Apostle Paul described us this way. He said, "We are God's workmanship." This word workmanship is the Greek word Poiema. It is where we get our English word poem. It is only used one other time in the Bible. And again, Paul is using it to describe another work of God – the cre- ated world. Many preachers and theologians like to say we are God's masterpiece and while this is true, this actually puts the emphasis on the work instead of the designer. You see, if you see yourself as unimpressive or of little value, you are looking at the work and not Who is doing the work. Let me illustrate another way. Have you ever gained the sig- nature of a famous person on a worthless piece of paper, shirt, or other item? If you have, then you'll understand how the value truly comes. And this is no different in our lives. What gave mankind value above all other creation was the signature breath of God on our lives. And what continues to give us value is not that we are just any sequence of rhyth- mic words strung together, but that we are a poem – some elaborate and some simple – but all, individually and au- thentically, signed by God. Executive Order No. 204 will take effect March 26 at 5 pm is set to ex- pire April 30 at 5 pm. The state's general mask man- date remains in effect. "Our fast and fair vac- cine distribution and our sustained progress with the COVID-19 metrics tell us we can move forward with easing restrictions if we do it safely," said Gov- ernor Cooper. "We are in a promising place. With North Caroli- na's COVID-19 key metrics improving and vaccina- tions increasing, we can responsibly use our dim- mer switch approach to easing restrictions guided by science and data," said NCDHHS Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. Executive Order No. 204 has three general categories of occupancy restrictions: up to 100 per- cent capacity, 75 percent capacity, and 50 percent capacity. All businesses must continue to maintain the 6 feet of dis- tance requirement between patrons and implement other safety pro- tocols as they ex- pand their capacity. Executive Order No. 204 will also in- crease mass gath- ering limits. The number of people who may gather indoors will increase from 25 to 50 and the number of people who may gather outdoors will increase from 50 to 100. This Order also fully lifts the restriction on the late-night sale and service of alcoholic bever- ages on bars, restaurants, and other establishments. Activities and settings are lower risk when they involve interacting with fewer people, being out- side, keeping masks on the entire time, keeping interactions with people short (under 15 minutes), staying physically distant, and avoiding singing, yelling, and cheering, ac- cording to public health officials. North Carolina is con- tinuing to see fast and fair vaccine distribution. To date, the state has ad- ministered over 4.1 million doses. Over 31.7 per- cent of people 18 and up have received at least one dose, and 18.8 percent are fully vaccinated. Vac- cine equity efforts remain a priority, with 18 percent of first doses administered to Black North Carolinians and 8 percent to members of the LatinX community last week. DHHS also released updates to the K-12 guid- ance. Schools should return to in-person instruc- tion to the fullest extent possible while following all public health protocols in the StrongSchoolsNC Toolkit. This update aligns with Session Law 2021-4, which Governor Cooper and bipartisan legisla- tive leadership worked on together. Plan A has al- ready been widely ad- opted across the state as districts, educators and support staff have worked hard to get students back in the classroom. The up- dated Toolkit no longer requires schools to do daily temperature checks and symptom screenings. Safety protocols such as masks and cleaning of high traffic areas are still required. Schools are also highly encouraged to con- duct free screening testing as recommended by the CDC. State health officials are continuing to monitor the presence of COVID-19 and its more contagious variants in North Carolina, which is why it is important to continue to have a mask mandate and continue to practice safety precau- tions, including the Three Ws: wear a mask, wait 6-feet apart, and wash hands often.
