The typical Amer- ican diet is high in salt due to the frequent use of pro- cessed foods and fast foods. If you have a problem with high blood pressure, use less salt over several weeks to help yourself slowly break the salt habit. This also in- creases your sensitivity to salt; therefore, you may find you need less salt than before to satisfy you. Or try the fol- lowing ideas: • Use the juice from fresh lemons and limes on poultry, fish and vegetables. • Buy more herbs and spic- es. Try chives, dill, rosemary, tarragon, sage, thyme, orega- no and dry mustard. Remem- ber, many herbs and spices begin to lose their flavor af- ter being exposed to air. Get rid of herbs that have been in your pantry for more than one year. Store herbs in a cool, dry place, not above the stove or near heat and light. Use fresh herbs when you can for the best flavor (use twice as much as dried in most recipes). • Try flavored vinegars. Combine different vinegars with herbs in glass contain- ers that can be sealed tightly. These make great gifts.
