Hunters spur increase in number of deer tested for CWD A total of 893 wild deer in Indiana were tested for chron- ic wasting disease (CWD) through the end of the 2020 - 21 deer season, an increase from the 823 tested in 2019. "While CWD has been found in the neighboring states of Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio, we have not detect- ed CWD in Indiana to date," said Mitch Marcus, DNR fish and wildlife health supervisor. CWD is a neurologic dis- ease that affects white-tailed deer. The disease is always fatal to deer and is transmit- ted directly through body fluids, such as feces, saliva, blood, and urine, or indirect- ly through the contamination of soil, plants, and water. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Pre- vention (CDC), there have been no cases of CWD in hu- mans. In areas where CWD is known to be present, the CDC recommends that hunt- ers have deer tested before eating the meat. Although DNR collects wild deer samples for CWD testing throughout the year, Moriah Boggess, Indiana DNR deer biologist, emphasized that most deer health samples are collected from hunter-har- vested deer during the fall. "Thank you to DNR staff, participating deer hunters, deer processors, and taxi- dermists for the success of our 2020 CWD surveillance efforts," Boggess said. "We could not have sampled 893 deer without your assistance and support." Any deer hunters who had their harvest sampled for CWD during the 2020 -21 deer season can check sample re- sults at reportsickanimal.dnr. IN.gov/search. For information related to CWD surveillance in Indiana, see on.IN.gov/cwd. Informa- tion about 2021-22 CWD mon- itoring efforts during the deer hunting seasons will be avail- able on the website later this year. Julian Hay scored 42.70 points in diving and earned fourth-place points for the Chargers at Her- itage Hills. Tyler Collins placed fourth in the 50 breast and was part of the 200 free relay with Jaden Nolan, Ju- lian Hay and Carter Blackwell. Easton Bailey was third in the 50 back, edging out two Heritage Hills swimmers. L.J. Deffendoll finished fourth in the 100 free and was part of the 400 free relay at Heritage Hills. Xander Parker anchored the winning 200 free re- lay, and swam in the 400 free and 200 medley re- lays. Awstyn Luff won the 100 IM and was second in the 100 fly at Heritage Hills.
