COACH EYEWEAR Social Security Matters By Rusty Gloor Working while collecting early Social Security benefits Dear Rusty: I will be 65 in August of this year. If I start drawing Social Security on my 65th birthday, how will my Social Security check be affected if I continue work- ing at my full-time job, and take home $1,380 every two weeks, until I reach my full re- tirement age? Signed: Work- ing Senior. Dear Working Senior: Social Security (SS) has an "earnings test" which ap- plies to anyone who collects benefits before they have reached their full retirement age (FR A). There is also a "first year rule" which applies when someone claims bene- fits mid-year, prior to their full retirement age. The first- year rule says that if you ex- ceed a monthly limit you ar- en't entitled to benefits for that month, and that applies for each remaining month in the first year, after your ben- efits start. Then, starting in 2022, you'll be subject to an annual earnings limit. Since you will reach your full retire- ment age in 2022, your annu- al limit that year will be a bit more than the 2021 FR A-year limit of $50,520 (the earnings limits change annually). If you claim Social Secu- rity to start in August when you are 65, for the remain- der of 2021 you'll be subject to a monthly earnings limit of $1,580. And if your gross earnings for each remain- ing month in 2021 are more than that (and yours would be), then you won't be enti- tled to Social Security bene- fits for the remaining months of 2021. For clarity, you would also have the option to re- quest that the annual limit ($18,960 for 2021) be used instead of the monthly limit, but at your earnings level you would still be required to re- pay all of your 2021 benefits (using the annual limit would require you to repay $1 for ev- ery $2 you are over the limit). When you file your income taxes next year, SS will dis- cover you ex- ceeded the 2021 earnings limit and require you to repay all ben- efits received in 2021. By "re- pay," I mean they will give you an option to repay every- thing they paid you in 2021 in a lump sum, or they will withhold future ben- efits until they recover what you owe because you exceed- ed the monthly limit. Alter- natively, you could request a less severe repayment plan, but you would need to nego- tiate that directly with Social Security. Essentially, if you plan to continue working full time in 2021, it may be wise to simply delay claiming your Social Se- curity for a while, because you will end up needing to return any benefits paid in 2021. You could still claim in August and then inform them you will ex- ceed the limit; in which case they will simply withhold your benefits. But in any case, you won't be eligible for SS bene- fits in 2021 at the earnings lev- el you shared. As explained above, your 2022 earnings limit will be more than the 2021 limit of $50,520 for those achieving FR A, and if you claim benefits to start in January 2022 that higher annual lim- it would apply. If you're still working full time at the same earnings level, you probably will not exceed the 2022 annual limit, so your benefits wouldn't be affected. But if you get a raise and ex- ceed the 2022 limit, SS will want back $1 for every $ 3 you exceeded the limit by (the FR A-year rate). Of course, since the earnings limit goes away when you reach your full retirement age, you might al- so consider just waiting until your FR A to claim Social Se- curity and completely avoid the earnings test. Alpha Delta Chapter met March 2 The Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Soci- ety International met March 2, via ZOOM. The hostess- es were the North Daviess teachers and retirees. Nine- teen members were in atten- dance. President Joan Weath- ers opened the meeting by reading An Old Irish Bless- ing. Laura Cox led members in a scavenger hunt. Win- ners were Alana Thompson and Janet Eaton. Their prizes will be mailed to them. The December hostesses chose CASA to receive do- nations from the chapter as its Christmas charity. The amount collected was divid- ed equally between the Da- viess County CASA and the Dubois County CASA. Ronet- ta Bough read letters of ap- preciation from Misty En- glish of Daviess County CA- SA and Deena Hubler from Dubois County CASA. Elizabeth Schaeffer gave a report from the Scholar- ship Committee. Applica- tions have been sent to area schools with a deadline for when they need to be post- marked to be considered. Julie Parr created a post- er for state convention which has been postponed from April to June 12, 2021. The title of the poster is Alpha Delta Chapter, Coping with Covid. Council 2 wants each chapter to provide a basket or auction item at the state con- vention to raise money for the emergency fund. Joan Weath- ers has a basket and will fill it with goodies for the auction. March meetings will be on the first Monday of the month instead of Tuesday so as not to interfere with Section- al Basketball tournaments. That was the precedence in the past until there was no in- terference. This year it kept some members from attend- ing the meeting. International Conferences will be in Portland, ME, July 7-10 and San Antonio, T X, Ju- ly 21-24. Anyone interested in attending can contact Presi- dent Weathers or go to the In- ternational DKG website for registration information. Shortly after beginning "Share Your Best" time, the meeting was abruptly ended due to the time limit allowed by ZOOM. The next meeting will be on May 4, with Barr- Reeve teachers and retirees as hostesses. Meeting place/ style will be determined clos- er to that date.
