His shot rimmed out, Vincennes grabbed the re- bound and fired it down the court as many of the Chargers were running toward the of- fensive end. It allowed Hardi- man to get a close look in the paint. He hit and was fouled. Hardiman's old-fashioned three-point play finished a five-point turnaround for Vin- cennes. Instead of Pike Cen- tral cutting it to 19 -15, Vin- cennes went up 22-13, with 1:19 left. They took that lead into the locker room at half- time. Pike Central's intensity on the offensive end picked up in the third quarter, spurred by their seniors. Gorby had sev- en points and Hanselman four, as they scored 11 of the Char- gers' 13 points in the third quarter. Pike Central always seemed to be running uphill and Vin- cennes always had an an- swer for them. Noah Bushey opened the second half with a long two, pushing Vincennes' lead to 24-13. Pike Central then went on a mini-run. Pey- ton Howald hit a long two just inside the three-point line to make it 24-15, Gorby had an if- fy drive in the paint to make it 26 -17 with 4:55 remaining. On the next possession, he hit a three to cut the lead to 26 -20. Again Hardiman, on the inside, answered to push the lead back to eight. Hanselman cut it back to six points on a drive in heavy traffic. Ethan Bushey got a steal and went the length of the floor to again secure an eight- point margin. One the next series, Gorby took an elbow to the face on first contact, then on second contact was called for a foul on the baseline, as Cooper Thorne's turnaround jump- er went down. Thorne made it a three-point play for a 33- 22 lead with 1:40 on the clock. Hanselman hit two free- throws to make it 33-24 and Gorby scored on another drive in the paint to make it 35 -26 as the third quarter ended. Gish gave the Chargers a jolt as the fourth quarter start- ed. He got a steal, drove into two defenders and powered the ball in the hoop, then hit the free throw to make it 35 - 29. It was as close as the Char- gers would get. Vincennes pounded the ball inside to Hardiman for a wide-open layup and then No- ah Bushey hit a three for a 40 - 29 lead. Freshman Quade Mor- ton came off the bench and on his second trip to the of- fense end of the floor, drilled a three-pointer to make it 44- 34 with just under four min- utes left. Kendric Sorgius was fouled inside and hit both free throws with 58 seconds left, but Vin- cennes had an insurmount- able 46 -36 lead that ended up 48 -36. Elliott said he thought the Chargers were probably more skilled than Vincennes, but Vincennes was much stron- ger. "They used their phys- icality and didn't allow us to use our skill," said Elliott. "I think we grew a lot this year. I don't think our record shows how well we did. We had several games where we had a four or five point lead and we just couldn't put it away. Our seniors are going to be missed. I was proud of our efforts and our fight all year," said Elliott. They should also wash hands thoroughly after han- dling or cleaning the birds, and avoid eating any animal they think could be ill. Wildlife photographer Scott Walden caught this unusually lethar- gic snow goose at Cane Ridge in the refuge. While hunters touch- ing, cleaning or eating birds should take pre- cautions, avian cholera is spread among birds and poses minimal risks to humans, ac- cording to the DNR. Charger senior Ethan Gorby moves with the ball against Vincennes Lincoln defenders in sectional ac- tion last Friday evening. Gorby was good for nine points in the 48-36 loss to Vincennes. Charger Freshman Julian Gish finds some space to put a shot up under the hoop at sectional this past week. Gish and Sean Hanselman each scored 10 points in the 48-36 sectional loss to Lincoln. The Pike Central Charger student section turned out to support the team in construction hard hats and safe- ty reflective gear for the sectional last week.
