Many are still recover- ing from COVID-19, surger- ies, and the aches and pains of everyday life. EVENTS December 31-New Year's Eve. Some will pray in the new year, but others will have parties. Some parties will have games, food and drinks of sodas and hot choc- olate. Then at midnight, they will bang on pots or anything to make noise to welcome in 2021. If you choose to drink adult beverages, our hope is that you stay at home or you give your keys to some re- sponsible person who does not drink. Stay safe into this new year. January 1-New Year's Day. Families get together for a meal with cabbage and black- eyed peas to continue the family tradition of wealth and health in the new year. There will also be resolutions made, so be careful to make ones you can keep all year long. Winslow and Petersburg seniors will not meet again until Governor Hol- comb gives the okay. Sweets Col- umn, Winslow, IN 47598 re- ceived no post- cards this week. The Winslow Patoka River is high but not overflowing. The little rain or drizzle we had on Dec. 19 wasn't enough to make it rise. The rain we got Dec. 23 may make it rise a bit, but along with the rain, we were supposed to get sleet and snow by Christmas Eve morning, but not that much. The temps were in the 30s- 40s, but we were happy to see the 50s-60s, even if only for two days. By Christmas day, our temperatures only rose into the mid-20s, with a wind chill in the teens and then over the weekend, it was supposed to get warmer into the 40s. I have been looking through the forest of trees and in some areas, you can see what is on the other side of those trees, like lights from houses that you thought was all forest areas. Speaking of lights, last Sat- urday, after our family got to- gether, Mom, Laura, Kyana, Norm and I drove to Santa Claus Lake Rudolph Village, where we seen some beauti- ful displays, where some ar- eas were set up in themes, such as sheep, quite a lot of them, and a Grinch area with a story. Houses and yards had colorful lights. Decorations in yards were blowups and cardboard cutouts, and light- ed items. This is a great place to bring the family on the two weekends before Christmas. Another park to drive through besides Hornady Park is Washington East- side Park, where we saw some new items, like a drag- on on the water with fire com- ing from his mouth and San- ta Claus in his sleigh with his eight reindeer on a hill- side. Every tree around the lake had colorful lights, mu- sical items being played, playground items, a train with smoke and many more items. We went through three times and could go through again. The many houses all along the highways were great to see with their differ- ent displays. We got back into Winslow, where we took Mom around East end, Goosehill, Main St. and Brownstown to see the decorations. Mom loved each and every one she viewed and there are so much more to see. Saturday was our Christ- mas with family and I cooked a 19 lbs. ham with mashed potatoes. Laura brought in green beans. Desserts were cherry crumb pie, pumpkin pie and decorated cookies. We had sodas to drink. We all sat around to open our gifts of hooded shirts, candy, snack cakes, felt tip pens, pictures, food containers, glasses, file folders, socks, hour glass, an- gel wings, Christmas trees and gloves, plus cards with money. Those there were Laura, Kyana, Mom Teresa, Ted, Norm and me. As a fam- ily, we had a great time to- gether. Saturday night, into the early morning of Sunday, our town workers did a great job of fixing a water leak that shot water high up into the air. Our guys were worn out, but they fixed the leak and everyone had water for their Sunday baths and that cup of coffee. Kyana and Laura stopped by Sunday, and Kyana, Mom and I played Yahtzee. Mom rolled sixes for her Yahtzee. Kyana got her Yahtzee on fours. Did you all get to see Jupi- ter and Saturn in the western sky on the first day of winter? It was a hit in Evansville with the telescopes set up to see the planets and their moons. It is also known as the Christ- mas star of the Star of Bethle- hem. These planets were last seen together 800 years ago. I was writing the col- umn when it was raining on Wednesday night, Dec. 23, and the rain was picking up. Then the winds began to blow hard enough you could feel it move or I should say, hear it through the trees, and then hit the house. This only lasted for 10 -15 minutes. I do believe some of that rain had sleet with it or it could have been heavy droplets off the tree limbs. Norm said Thursday morning, Dec. 24 was frosty and a lot colder. Christmas Eve night was only supposed to get into the low teens and Christmas day was to be in the middle 20s with a wind chill in the teens. So, I guess we all stayed inside our warm houses. Time for the lights to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your area. To all the children on Christmas break, we hope you had a great and wonder- ful Christmas. Enjoy and have fun on your days off until the new year. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. Wear your mask and distance yourselves in crowds. Have a Happy New Year, from Sweets Column. Pregnant... or think you are?
