Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 This past Sunday we wrapped up our series, We are the Church, looking at how the New Testament calls us all as a church to go, and be disci- ple makers. Though we all in the body of Christ have differ- ent gifts, we all have one call. If you missed any of the three messages from this series I in- vite you to find them on our Facebook page. For many of us the season during this pandemic has been tough, plans have changed, 2020 didn't go the way we ex- pected it to. And some days we don't know what is next. But I remain encouraged that as we go on we can still find hope. We still find hope in God's sov- ereignty. Joseph in the Old Testament told his brothers "You meant this for evil." Meaning they intended evil for him, to beat him, sell him to slavery, and ultimately hope he would die VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E. "Faith is the soul's intake, love the soul's outlet." "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). John Manges, Minister Christian in Egypt, and never to hear of him again. But he continues "God meant it for good…" Jo- seph doesn't say that God de- cided to show up in the midst of the chaos and work with what was there. Not even while his brothers were wish- ing and doing evil, God was setting up a good that no one could foresee. So, while the enemy uses pandemics, pes- tilence, disease, violence, and death for evil, God is working for the ultimate good. The good we see when we see Christ on the throne, and as the psalmist says the earth has been made his footstool. Continue to take heart, and have hope. I know I will. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me." (Psalm 56:3-4, NLT). As Christians, fear is still a battle we face on a daily basis, especially in times like this. Sometimes it can seem hard not to fear and just trust God. Although we may be weak, he is strong. Trusting God does not mean that we should not follow the rules put out by our leaders. God has placed them there for a purpose and that purpose may be our protec- tion, for only God knows that truth. While putting our trust in God first is the main goal of Christians, our fear should be there with him as well. God is not only the God of love and peace, but the all-knowing judge. Doing what God has said for us to do is way more important than doing what we feel is right. For we will be judged one day and our trust, faith and obedience will be the evidence in that hearing. Don't only trust God, but fear his judgments and obey his com- mandments, because he will protect you and guide you if you can only retain your faith in him fully. God bless you and keep you. Rodney Fretwell, Sr. Pastor JESUS CHRIST OUR FIRM FOUNDATION 1415 N. Vincennes Ave. Petersburg 812-354-4424 or 812-582-0240 Sunday morning fellowship 10 a.m.; Church at 10 :30 a.m.; Bible studies: Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Brian Eilert's house and Thursday night at 7 p.m. at church. At Bible study, August 27, we will be viewing a documentary called "Before The Wrath," narrated by Kev- in Sorbo. Praise God for the five peo- ple who were baptized on Sun- day. "Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seven years, did you really fast for Me–for Me'" (Zechariah 7:5)? When thinking about fast- ing, most people think of do- ing without food or only eat- ing fish on Friday during the season called Lent, when they should consider doing without the things that tend to replace time spent with God or could cause a rift in their relation- ship with Him. The motive is to draw us closer to Him, rath- er than getting stuff for which we may be asking. Mourning, likewise, isn't about wearing black or old clothes, paying no attention to our appearance, or constant- ly wearing a sad face. It's be- ing so sorry for the sin we've committed that we ask God for help to stop sinning and take steps to control ourselves when those situations test us, which moves us closer to God. Are we fasting and mourn- ing to be nearer to God and have a better, closer relation- ship? Or are we just wanting something and think that skip- ping a few meals will bring it to us? Are we so set on follow- ing traditions and making a show that we aren't checking our motives or thinking about God? These were probably the questions God wanted the people of Zechariah's time to think about when he posed the question in our scripture above. Hopefully it will inspire many to see a difference and adopt a change in the inner man. As a parent of more than one child, I realize how im- portant it is to treat my kids equally. If I favor one child over another, I am potentially causing division between my kids. As a parent, my job is to teach, comfort and correct my kids. My greatest joy as a parent has been to watch my kids play and grow together. As they've grown into adults, they still have a very close re- lationship. By being the one who corrects and disciplines them when needed, instead of allowing one of my chil- dren special treatment, I've enabled them to have a rela- tionship that's drawn them closer instead of causing di- vision. "Peter said, 'Now I know for certain that God doesn't show favoritism with people but treats everyone on the same basis'" (Acts 10 :34, TP T). "Your reasonable service" (Romans 12:1). Why are we saved? We are saved in order to be sac- rificed. There is a striking lesson in God's saving cer- tain of the clean beasts and clean fowl at the time of the flood. At God's direction, Noah brought these into the ark of salvation. These clean creatures were favored above those that were lost in the flood. But as soon as the door was opened, these creatures were offered up as a burnt offering. They were saved in order to be sacri- ficed. Have we realized that we as Christians are saved for exactly that purpose? "I be- seech you therefore, breth- ren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1). This is acceptable un- to God, and it is our reason- able service. Noah's sacrifice of the clean animals brought great blessing to the earth; and the "living sacrifice" of God's children bring great blessing to mankind.
