This non-invasive treatment encourages the proper growth and development of a child's jaw and airway as they grow. Healthy Start provides an effective treatment to sleep-dis- ordered breathing and potentially prevents the need for braces down the road. "As parents, we see the importance of Healthy Start. This service will help our patients long term. I have a two-year-old at home starting on this system, and I am put at ease that this ser- vice will help him avoid oral complications down the road," said Dr. Karner. Sleep-disordered breathing can present itself with a variety of symptoms and is often misdiag- nosed or worse, overlooked and untreated. When a child goes untreated, they may experience arrested growth development, crooked teeth, even behavioral changes that can present as ADD/ADHD, as well as bedwetting. Many symptoms indicate sleep-disordered breathing, including heavy snoring and gasping and snorting sounds as they sleep. The healthy start system is designed to encourage the prop- er development of the jaw and airway to optimize airfl ow and promote proper nasal breathing while also straightening the child's teeth. With early intervention ranging from ages 2-12, the child wears the uniquely designed oral appliance for only a few hours a day or while they sleep. "The device is not painful and is only worn for a short time during the day or while sleeping. This makes it more likely the child won't remove the mouthpiece," explained Dr. Karner. -More- Cornerstone will begin offering the Healthy Start System to their patients immediately. Parents can call the offi ce to schedule a consultation to determine if their child is a good candidate for the program. "Cornerstone is committed to providing our patients with a lifetime of optimal oral health with ongoing investment in oral technology, like the Healthy Start System, to give our patients the best dental care available," Dr. Lutz-Craver added. Cornerstone Dental Associates is located at 101 Life Enrichment Blvd. Shelby, NC 28150 and offers a variety of care and services, including preventive care, restorative services, and cosmetic services. For many children, school marks the first time they are away from their par- ents for an extended pe- riod of time. It also may be the first time they ride in a vehicle other than their parents' cars. Each school day, 25 million children ride a bus to school in the United States. A school bus is among the safest modes of transport and one of the most regulated vehicles on the road, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra- tion. Riding a school bus can be a novel experience no matter a student's age or grade. Kindergarten- ers may be introduced to the school bus on their first day of school, while older students are no doubt familiar with life inside a school bus. But all students and families can benefit from a re- fresher course on school bus procedures to ensure this school year begins on safe footing. • Be a smart pedes- trian. Riding the school bus is very safe, but in- juries can occur walking to and from the bus stop. Watch for cars backing out of driveways and al- ways look both ways mul- tiple times before crossing streets. • Remember school bus laws. Most areas of the country have specific school bus laws that in- clude stopping when red lights are flashing on the school bus. Cars must stop whether they're be- hind the school bus, next to it or on the opposite side of the street facing the bus. Stopping allows passengers to enter or exit the bus safely. • Stand away from the curb. The National Safety A refresher course in school bus safety Council advises keep- ing six feet, or three giant steps, away from the curb while waiting for the bus. Young children should be carefully supervised. • Be visible. Always cross in front of the bus, making eye contact with the driver so that he or she knows your intentions be- fore crossing. If you drop something, do not bend down to pick it up. Tell the driver instead. • Remain seated. Find a seat promptly and remain seated for the duration of the ride. Do not stand up and proceed down the center aisle until the bus has stopped. • Minimize distractions. Always speak softly and behave so that you do not distract the driver. School buses are very safe vehicles, but passen- gers need to do their part to avoid injury. Carolina Carolina CLASSIFIEDS .com Your Link to Local Classifi eds!
