Fun for the whole family. The Winslow and Petersburg Senior Citizens meeting is still on hold for now. The Winslow Senior Group is doing some deep cleaning the month of July to maybe be open again in late August when they get the okay from Governor Eric Holcomb. The homemade meals ended in June and a big thank you to all who made and deliv- ered the meals to our seniors and handi- capped in Pike County. Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 re- ceived no postcards this week. Winslow Patoka River is still very low. We got rain on Tuesday, July 7, but 15 -20 minutes of rain isn't enough to make it rise. This past Saturday, July 11 was Clog the Patoka, where (this year) only the kay- aks and canoes could float in the water, as the inflatables will get punctured by the limbs and trees sticking out of the water. Even the Wednesday rain and thunder for about one hour wasn't enough to raise the water level. The fields of corn are taller and you can see ears of corn on the stalks, the beans have grown in other fields. The flowers of the season, like the irises, look great in all their colors, Black-eyed Susans and bachelor buttons are standing tall, the Rose of Sharons are in blooms of purple, white and pink. The lightning bugs are do- ing a great job as they light up the yards at night and I heard the hummingbirds are around. I ha- ven't seen one yet. This hot and humid weather has been around for about two weeks now, but in Winslow, the rain is avoiding us. It goes south, north or stops at the county line. The temps have been 95 and up, but the humidity brings the heat index up to 100, so the air conditioners are getting a good workout. Our Winslow town workers are working out in the humidity, so if you see them in your area of town, offer them some water to drink to keep them hydrated. Our town does look spruced up for anyone passing through, and they even cleaned Main St. It looked great until someone lit- tered. Lafayette St. is grated on the sides, plus they have done mowing, weedeating and more, no matter what heat is out there. For a Winslow citizen, I'm proud to show off our small town of friendly stars. The old Carhartt store has a new name of the Cornerstone Store House, where you can come in and pick out free clothing, books, laundry soap and much more of your need- ed items. Last Saturday, a week ago, was July 4, the day of our independence. Most of us stayed home and ate from the grill, stove or bought a dinner from the stars who cook every year for the Fourth of July cel- ebration. Even though we didn't get to see or be in a parade this year, the fireworks in Winslow were spectacular. We saw beauti- ful colors coming through the trees from Main Street. Our neighbors shot off some colorful ones next door on both sides of us, up the hill on 3rd street was some and we heard but didn't see some on Main Street, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Sugar Ridge Rd, and Log- town from our area in the Brownstown part of Winslow. I had said "oohh, aahh" and clapped as we enjoyed our neighbor- hood celebration from home. Then a few nights afterwards, we heard a few more. It's nice to enjoy some needed fun. Oh, I almost forgot! Did you see the moon on July 4? The colors were orange with red, and it was big and bright in the sky while the fireworks were displayed. Our dog and cat got to come inside while the noise of the fireworks were heard. My mom, Mildred, came for a visit on that day for at least two weeks. We still go out for ice cream and drive around the area. She has said she remembers some of the areas we travel, but there are some changes in other areas. I have seen some new houses or trees cut down and high- ways with detours for bridge work. The Highway 51 skeletons are sitting on the porch stoop waving at everyone that passes by. The Oakland City New Lake has a few campers and some kids were swimming, but no boats of fishermen that day and the lake must have had some rain because it looked to be full. Terri Ann and Ted stopped by Sunday to visit with mom and to catch up on her stay in the hospital, where, since she is out, she is going to therapy sessions almost every- day of the work week to help with walking and other stuff going on with her. Then on top of that, she also had physical ther- apy, so now she is really sore. I also got to sing "Happy Birthday" to her in person and that cheered her up a bit. Our Winslow Lions Club met on July 2 and I guess it snuck up on everyone be- cause some were late and others almost forgot. It was a meal meeting and we love the meals fixed by Lion Pat and other Lions. This meeting meal we had soup, beans and ham, cornbread, fried potatoes, cookies, ice cream, and a new dessert that was named Sweets Delights, plus tea and coffee. It was very tasty. I believe I didn't mention back in December that we have a new Lion, Sherry Nelson. She has helped us on several events and decided to join and roar together as Winslow Lions. Wel- come, Sherry! Congrats to Cory Lemond and Sandra Dotterwith on the birth of their first child, a son that goes by the name of Terrance Lee Lemond, born on June 3, 2020. Wel- come, Terrance Lee, to Pike County. He's a cute boy. In our area, we have had a street light out for years and since the trees were cut or trimmed on the corner, we could use a light so the town or Debra called, and now we have light shining on our corner again. Thanks, Debra and Vectren. Winslow Community Center doesn't have the caretaker to watch over the place to help people from destroying the prop- erty, so if all of our stars who live on or pass by could help, and if you see some- thing out of place or someone who is do- ing wrong, stop them and report what you saw. Help keep our community safe for all of us to use and enjoy. Henry is still there, but not 24-7. Well we had and are still having an ad- venture with a drip, drip, drip in the show- er, so we got another shower head to fix the problem, but that did not stop the drips. So, we or Norm got in this small space by hanging over a board and got ev- erything loose, and the two water connec- tion plugged so we could turn the water on again in the house. So off we go on the 3rd of July to find another shower faucet that would fit and wouldn't you believe it, there are no faucets for showers, just two faucets that run up to a shower. We got all the fittings to install and all went well until the water was turned on again and I yelled out, "Turn off, got a leak." This time it was the hose connection, so we got new hoses, but it leaked again. So we got a different type of hose, but no, it just leaked before we got the water turned on. This time, we decided to take everything off again, plug up the water lines to get water on again to the house and now we need to fix the show- er wall because it split. So for the whole weekend and trying everything we could think of, we are stumped at why it's not working. At one time, Norm got stuck, but after a time, he finally got out, it is a small confined space to work in. Thursday, July 9, we took Mom over to visit with Janice, the cousin, and they had a great visit talking about everything. As Mom was visiting, I drove to Dr. Dash- board in Evansville to get a new radio in- stalled. It took a little longer, because on- ly one speaker worked. So they had to see if the other speakers were okay and they were, just unplugged, except for one, but that is okay because the reception of sound from what is working will make you put ear plugs in. Now to put on our sta- tion of rock music and figure out how to work this radio, it has bluetooth and Norm knows what it is. The ride back to Winslow was great to listen to music but the silence was okay also, we can still talk to each oth- er. Dr. Dashboard, we love our new radio and we appreciate your service to install and give us some music on the road. The Clog the Patoka hasn't happened yet for this week's writing, so you will have to see all the pictures in the Press-Dis- patch and hear what had happened in next week's column. The river is still low, not enough rain, but lots of high humidity. Because of this COVID-19 and Pike County with 12 cases now, our Poehlein 79th Family Reunion an August 9, 2020, is in limbo for now, but we have a reunion meeting on July 25 at the Corner Book Shoppe at 9 a.m. to discuss the issue. Speaking of Poehlein the 30th Spring Poehlein Bass Tourney was July 11, so the winners and how they placed will be in next week. Hope you all had fun catching that biggest bass. Thursday, July 9 was my brother George's birthday and he turned 66 years old, so we called him and sang "Happy Birthday" to him twice because of the re- ception. He was on the road as a trucker. He mentioned he just passed Sketter Park on Route 3, wherever that is in the close states he travels. We hope you all have a great summer and the lights are about to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders of na- ture and the beauty of your area. Always smile, wave and say "Hi" to everyone you see this week.
