The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, July 8, 2020 A-5 OTWELL FINDS NEW WAY TO CELEBRATE JULY 4 More than two dozen volunteers took orders and delivered chicken and rib dinners for those driving through the annual Otwell Fourth Of July cel- ebration. This year the Ruritan and Jefferson Township Community Cen- ter members combined their efforts in what turned out to be a very well-at- tended community event. Traffic circled around and backed up onto SR356 nearly 30 minutes prior to the noon start for the dinner. Work- ers with clipboards and face-masks took orders and delivered the goods to vehicles parked four wide between the hamburger stand and the center. Serving started 20 minutes early due to the traffic congestion on the curve. James Capozella photos Four arrested for drunken driving over holiday weekend By Andy Heuring Four people were arrested for driving while intoxicated in Pike County over the holi- day weekend. A rural Petersburg man was arrested late on the Fourth of July for drunken driving and possession of a controlled sub- stance. Todd McCann, 47, of 5368 W. CR550N, Petersburg was arrested at 11:11 p.m. by Pe- tersburg Patrolman Scott Ar- nold. Arnold said he witnessed a black truck cross the yellow line left of center near Poplar St. in Petersburg on Highway 61. He stopped the truck near Cherry St. and talked with Mc- Cann, who was driving. Pa- trolman Arnold said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol and noticed slurred speech and watery bloodshot eyes. He said McCann admitted drinking "a couple." McCann failed field sobriety tests and during a patdown, Patrolman Arnold found a container with pills in it. According to Arnold's re- port McCann said they were Loratabs. He was taken to the Pike County Jail, where Arnold said McCann tested 0.104 percent for blood alcohol content. The legal limit in Indiana is 0.08 percent. McCann was preliminarily charged with operating a vehi- cle while intoxicated and pos- session of a controlled sub- stance. A Winslow man was arrest- ed early Saturday morning af- ter police found him parked on the sports fields. Nicholas Brewster, 30, of 806 E. Union St., Winslow, was arrested on charges of habitu- al traffic violator and operat- ing a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction. Pike County Deputy Sheriff Jarrod Simmons said Reserve Deputy Jacob Claridge saw the vehicle at the sports fields be- hind the Elementary School, ran a license plate check and found it was expired. Deputy Simmons then ap- proached Brewster and talk- ed with him. He said when Brewster got out of the vehi- cle he could smell the odor of alcohol and Brewster's speech was extremely slurred and his balance was poor. According to Deputy Sim- mons' report, Brewster said he had driven there and had been parked about 15 minutes. Brewster failed field sobri- ety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.188 percent for blood alcohol content, more than twice the legal limit. An Evansville man was ar- rested at 11:57 p.m. in Pe- tersburg after police saw him drive left of center twice on Highway 61. Wesley John Ritter, 28, of 419 Williams Rd., Evansville was arrested on a charge of op- erating a vehicle while intoxi- cated with a prior conviction. Petersburg Patrolman Scott Arnold said he stopped Ritter after seeing him drive left of center near Locust St. and stopped him. When he talked with Ritter, Patrolman Arnold said could smell odor of alco- hol and that Ritter used his vehicle to steady his balance while standing. Ritter failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he tested 0.142 percent for blood alco- hol content. A Vincennes man was ar- rested for drunken driving early Sunday morning after police received a report of a possible intoxicated driver on Highway 56. Luis Chevez Cruz, 39, of 712 S. 16th St., Vincennes, was ar- rested at 12:30 a.m. Sunday by Pike County Deputy Jared Simmons. Deputy Simmons said a mo- torist from Dubois County re- ported a possible intoxicated driver westbound on High- way 56 toward Pike County. Simmons was near Velpen and headed toward 56 and located a maroon truck near CR500E. Simmons said he saw the truck go left of center four times before stopping it. When he approached Cruz, who was driving, he noticed odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes and poor manual dex- terity. Simmons also saw nine empty beer cans in the back of the truck. Cruz denied drinking, but failed field sobriety tests in- cluding a portable breath test. He was taken to the Pike County Jail, where he refused a chemical test and was pre- liminarily charged with oper- ating a vehicle while intoxicat- ed, refusal.
